Loss of muscle begins in your 30’s but speeds up when you hit 50. Not all lost muscle mass is due to ageing - some is due to inactivity. The most important intervention against muscle loss is strength training. Mature adults who strength train can regain loss of muscle & strength. I was inactive til I hit the age of 51. Although it hasn’t been easy, I’ve gained lean muscle & strength in my 50’s. It is possible - it takes time, patience & consistency. Playing catch-up this week and I read lots of the #queenteam loved upper body, so opted to start my Saturday off with that. Wahoo, fantastic workout🔥🔥🔥 I managed all rounds of the first 3 circuits and then did one round each of the optional ones, just to try the different exercises. I swam 2.4 miles this morning in the 17th Annual Low Country Splash: 2nd in my 55-59 AG, 52nd out of 397 overall. The start is hectic as all 397 swimmers begin together in one mass wave. The water was very choppy but we still had a strong current which is what makes this race so much fun - the current AND the ending of the race at the WWII aircraft carrier USS Yorktown at Patriots Point right across the harbor from downtown Charleston!

So I am at 6.5 percent Body fat today. Eight weeks from yesterday is Nationals. 💪🏾That means I have 55 days to drop 3 percent and maintain my muscle mass which is good, because I don’t have to do a drastic cut🙏🏾. I don’t want to lose lean muscle trying to burn fat too quickly. So my goal is to drop 1 percent every 18 days. Last year I was 3.8 percent body fat at 176lbs. I’m hoping to be 180, but I won’t be able to gain 4 lbs of muscle in 8 weeks, maybe 2-3. Can’t eat that much protein. Diet changes are no sugars (unless around workout for shuttling nutrients) sweeteners, diary, and protein shakes until@after the show ☹️Close monitoring of my fats and sodium. I’ll update my body fat every two weeks. Cardio 3 times a week for two weeks and I’ll check my progression. Don’t want to go five days so far away, being at 6.5 percent already. I feel pretty good. Getting butterflies though. I am so proud of @robinwerner.nutrition who put in weeks (20) of prep for her #naturalbodybuilding competition today. Not only does she do all of her meal preparation she takes care of 3 kids and preps all of my meals too. The dedication she has putting in the hours working out is mind blowing. She has an amazing coach @veganproteins to give her the plan but Robin does it to the max. She gets pushed by her trainer and fellow bodybuilder @bodzilla17 who is not only a trainer but a friend and one her fiercest cheerleaders. Robin is an inspiration to me. I am in awe that she gets on a stage with other women who are up to 30 years younger than her. (She held her own) Robin definitely embodies her favorite motto, Carpe Diem! I spent my day today running errands that I normally don't have the time to do. I made it a point to have a shake first thing in the morning and then I had a coffee and then I drank water for the rest of the day I did fit in 45 minutes of cardio 😎👌😊💗 Then I ate my amazing vegetable soup around 5 p.m today. So, I pretty much fasted from last night from 7 p.m. until I had my soup today at 5. You know what? I wasn't even hungry. It is absolutely amazing how quickly the body adapts when we turn our mind off of food and focus on the tasks at hand. If you have been following my posts, then you know that I have been doing a lot of internal work. Through this work and to my absolute amazement, all of the eating I have done that brought me up to 260 lb many years ago truly, was all emotional! I have been out to buy the fixings for my green drinks which I have missed so much! All this being said, stop denying to yourself that the things you thought you had forgotten about, forgiven, or let go of are actually done with. If, you have not done the work and you are still very unhealthy and eating, drinking excessively, or taking drugs - there is a hole in your soul and that needs to be dealt with. Ocb natural New England 2 Nd year on a row winners of BEST TEAM AWARD. 3 pro card wins 5 class wins 5 overall division wins Everything placed top 4 Show had good level of competition so no gimmies! Possibly the best day of coaching since I started this. This team is simply amazing in every sense of the word. Supportive of one another (20 plus teammates came to support all day) Practice good sportsmanship all day. To say this was a special day would be a understatement. Also , for the record the team award is given based on a pints system of top 3 placings in all OPEN categories. We had less people that the two other teams and still won the award. 💥SQUAT VS HINGE💥. - 🐨Ever hear people talk about squat movements vs hinge movements and not understand what they are talking about? - 🙉Someone says “Hey, you’re squatting that hinge”, or “You’re hinging that squat” Huh? WTH does THAT actually mean? - 🐴If you have been confused by this, let’s take care of that right now. - 🦄Both movements are equally important and can help you lose fat, get stronger, and build lean muscle, but there are some distinct differences - 🐴The squat movement emphasizes the knee joint - meaning your knees will bend more and will have more stress put upon them. Your torso will remain upright and your shins will be slightly forward. Your quads are going to get the most benefit while Glutes and hamstrings will be included more depending on stance, There are many different squat variations - something for everyone . Box squats, Goblet Squats, Back Squats, Front Squats. They all feel very different and there a nuances with each. - 🐿The hinge movement emphasizes your hips, has less knee bend and more load will be on your hips as they sit a little higher. Your torso will be more parallel to the ground and your shins will be vertical. A hinge will tap into your glutes and hamstrings more - 🌞Hip hinges can be great for people with cranky knees - much less pressure on the knees, but the movement pattern itself can be difficult for some to master. Hip Hinge movements include Deadlifts (Kettle bell, barbell, Romanian,), Hip Thrusts, Kettle Bell Swings - 🐶Both movements have practical applications- Sitting in/getting up from a chair is a squat movement. Picking things up off the floor is a hinge pattern - ➡️Takeaway: One is not better than the other. One of my favorite exercises and one that I feel that should be included in every program, the push-up. Here Jackie is demonstrating a weighted push-up and a push-up variation using the DB grips. Push-ups have multiple benefits 1) you can do them anywhere 2) an efficient movement in that they target multiple muscle groups 3) they build core strength almost similar to a plank 4) high energy expenditure helping to burn calories 5) many variations are possible #pushup #stronger #canyonsfitness #exercise
