Peter Handke, Elogio dell’infanzia.
e adesso riesce appena a sospettarlo,

I finished reading The Loving Spirit last night. I've read so many of Daphne du Maurier's novels but never her debut until now. It didn't quite hook me in the way, say Rebecca or Jamaica Inn have you gripped from the first sentence, but I enjoyed it in a quieter way.

You can see all the themes that du Maurier explores throughout her career here in this first book- family relationships, parenting, our relationship with our homes and surroundings, romantic love, and of course the sea 🌊
It's had me thinking a lot about how much of ourselves makes it through to the next generation and nature vs nurture.

I've been thinking about researching our family tree for a while, then after talking to a library colleague this weekend and reading this book, I decided to just go for it. Funnily enough I've already made it back to 19th century Devon on one of the branches.

Testimonial from the recently completed project for Tom in Lenham

Testimonial from the recently completed project for Tom in Lenham "I commissioned Sam to help me with my Family History research, as I had hit a few brick walls with my own research. She was able to unearth valuable additional information and piece together some missing links, which has been extremely helpful and provided a few surprises. All Sam's research was presented in a professional folder, including copy certificates and mini family tree for the addition information uncovered. Would have no hesitation in recommending Sam for your genealogy research" Image: The quay at Waterford c. 1890–1900 #familyhistory #genealogy #present2past #waterfordhistory

Allen Tomlinson born October 15th 1827, my 4th great grandfather. He was a farmer in Bucks County and had 7 children with my 4th great grandmother Elizabeth before she died two days before his birthday in 1867. He then married Rebecca Hawkins who outlived him by almost 25 years. He passed away at age 84 in 1912. He is buried in William Penn Cemetery, along with many of his Quaker relatives.

This is Milledge, my 2nd great-grandfather. I feel like I’ve been in somewhat of a spat with him for the last five years or so. Milledge was a prominent fruit farmer in the Pacific Northwest. He traveled across the country as a young boy, covered wagon-style. He worked as an Indian-scout in the time of Buffalo Bill. His name is recorded in an Oregon history book, along with his two wives—neither of whom were my great-great grandma Agnes. I don’t know whether their marriage was legitimate, or if it was simply kept quiet because divorce was taboo at the time, but I don’t think their relationship ended well. I have been searching for quite awhile, but I’ve yet to find out the truth. Every time I look at photos of Milledge, I feel him smirking at me, knowing he has kept his secrets well. I won’t give up, though, Pops.⠀

#genealogyphotoaday #challenge #occupation My dad was hired to clean the floors in the powerhouse at Dow Chemical Company when he was in high school in the 1930s because they needed a good pitcher for their company softball team. His dream had been to be a rural mailman so he could be outdoors every day, but he ended up staying with Dow and had a career traveling around the world, seeing more than he ever dreamed possible. #family #familystory #oldphoto #familyarchaeology #familyexcavation #archivist #retro #pasttime #history #genealogy #ancestry #ancestors #familyhistory

Wow what an incredible weekend! Thank you to everyone who visited my studio, whether IRL or digitally. We talked military history, found photography, painting techniques, the Visconti tarot cards, DNA results, the repetitions of events throughout history and much much more. —
This little work in progress got A LOT of attention and I look forward to completing her portrait in the coming weeks. —

DID YOU MISS IT? I’ll be sending out an email to recap the event (with photos/videos) for any of you who couldn’t make it. Just make sure you are subscribed to my collector’s list to receive the email (link in bio).

My father and grandmother with a scenic Colorado backdrop. My father looks to be about 13. This would be around 1955. Colorado offers so many opportunities for beautiful backgrounds for photos. Even my dad and aunts don't know where some of them were taken, even if they are in the photos. Remember to take notes when your taking photos. Even today, metadata captured in digital cameras can't tell you who is in the picture.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The Magdalene sisters (2002) is a terrific film that portrays the plight of women and girls that were unjustly sentenced to hard labour for their ‘sins’. These sins could involve having a baby out of wedlock, being sexually abused or being too pretty. I was reminded of this film when I came a across a Magdalene laundry in the 1911 census. Seeing the names of these poor women makes it all the more real. You can see over half were sent from all over Ireland and even one from England, in order to avoid shame on the families.
You would like to think that the closures of these institutions came from the realisation of right and wrong but in actuality it was two things, globalisation and modern technology. Globalisation meant people were no longer in delay with the occurrences of the world. News spread faster, especially crimes against humanity. modern technology meant nearly every home contained a washing machine. The laundries were no longer a lucrative business for the church and therefore the use of slave labour was not needed.
The last laundry closed in 1996.
I wonder how many of these women never left?

• #ireland #irish #lestweforget #convent #abuse #scandal #church #catholic #women #girls #themagdalenesisters #crime #evil #survivor #movies #genealogyphotoaday #films #pope #laundry #slave #genealogy #history #instagram #usa #australia #canada #england #dublin #insta_ireland

The best part of my job @ancestry is when I get to share stories and details about someone’s #familyhistory with them. The more I do it the more firmly I believe there really is a story in every tree, you just have to start looking! Jeff and Kelly of @studiodiy are as down to earth and approachable as the seem, it was so great to meet them and share the #ancestry love 🌱💚📗 #lovemyjob

Today I’m debuting a new weekly series - “Just Another Music Monday” which will focus on different musical artists each Monday.
.
Inspired by @myfamilygenie, this new series is similar to her #bravotv series. I begin with her blessing. 🤗
.
I chose to begin with the Bangles being that their song “Manic Monday” inspired the title and hashtag. @susannahoffsofficial, the band’s lead vocalist, was born and raised in the Los Angels area. Her parents, both successful, were the grandchildren of immigrants who came to America in the years shortly after 1900 for a better life. How proud they would be to see all that they created.
.
The photos above are @susannahoffsofficial at Palisades High School, 1976 and two documents related to her great grandfather, Moses Hoffer, and his immigration to the United States.
.
Go to www.jamistoneking.com to read the entire blog post. Let me know who you’d like me to research next!

Did you know that @loukyparks manages five public cemeteries in Louisville? The first public cemetery was located on Jefferson Street between 11th and 12th and was used as early as 1786. The second burial ground, Western Cemetery as shown here, was established in 1830 between 15th and 18th Streets on Jefferson and referred to as the Lower Jefferson, or pioneer, cemetery. While these images are a bit eerie, perfect for the Halloween season, they are also a great reminder of the importance of cemetery preservation. ————————————————————
Sometimes grave markers are the only record we have left when trying to document our family histories. This marker for Capt. James Patten, his wife Phoebe, and son George which was erected by their daughter Sarah R. Talbot ties together two generations.

This second public burying ground officially closed in 1893, and many of those buried there were removed to other cemeteries. Today much of this cemetery lies in ruins, and only a few records remain. [Rogers Clark Ballard Thruston Photograph Collection, November 1915, TC-77-79] ————————————————————To learn more about how to trace your family’s story stop by our exhibit, “Connecting the Dots: Exploring Your Family History” open daily until February 28, 2019. FREE Tours @ 2pm!

The first of the studio portraits is this gentleman. Taken at Sydney Victor White's studio in Reading #RDGUK, this cabinet card has an index number - either 575 or 124575 - written in pencil on the reverse.
.
The @nationalportraitgallery has a carte de visite portrait dated 1885 in its collections by Sydney White. Judging by the printing on the front, I'd say mine is of a later date than the one held at the Gallery.
.
A look in local trade directories available via Ancestry shows the second Blagrave Street studio there in 1887, but not in 1876 or 1899, so that really helps date the picture. Perhaps a trawl through local newspaper archives will help.
.
This man also appears in another photo, number 4, coming on Wednesday.

Know your geography, and your history...

Esteve Paluzie i Cantalozella founded in 1840 in Olot his workshop to print his own pedagogic books (my father used them as a kid, still in use in the late 1930s), with such success that in 1862 he started printing coloured charts and maps with this same educational spirit.

Also, in 1860 he sent to print his own book on the geography of Olot, famous for its volcanoes, but also on its history and most important people:

Su comarca, sus extinguidos volcanes, su historia civil, religiosa y local. Biografías de sus hijos más notables en letras, armas, etc." + The first image, although not one of his prints, shows part of Mapa de geografía física, by Bernardo Álvarez y Marina, from the Paluzie firm archive at http://cartotecadigital.icgc.cat/cdm/landingpage/collection/paluzie + This 1880 map shows, on an Iberian peninsula shaped land, all sorts of geographic terms, monuments, as well as meteorological phenomena. Today’s #genealogyphotoaday prompt is “occupation” and I’m sharing my Daddy’s hard hat and lock/keys. He worked for US Steel in #lorainohio until his retirement. I love this hat! Each scratch and groove reminds me of the times he was saved from a tragedy. ❤️ I wish I had his lunch box - it always smelled like instant coffee and had oatmeal cream pies in it. I kinda think he left those in there for me! I was always a #daddysgirl

In honor of October being Family History Month I'm highlighting some ways to celebrate your family history this month! A way we can do this is by preserving and sharing our family photos. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
🍂 The first step in preserving family photos is to store them in an acid free box or photo album. Don't skip this step it's the most important! 🍂 Next digitize your photos. This step is so important too. Photos can get wet, they can burn, they can rip or even get lost. If you make an effort to scan your photos (or hire someone to do it for you) your precious family photos can live on if something were to happen to them. 🍂 Share what you have. Now that your photos are in a digital format share them online. I've never understood it when people are unwilling to share their family photos (as long as they aren't too personal). Post them on familysearch.org or ancestry.com where other family members can discover and enjoy them too. I can't count how many times people have contacted and thanked me for putting my pictures out there for others to cherish. 🍂 My last step is simple, DON'T WAIT! Start today to preserve and share your family photos. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
{Pictured is my paternal grandmother who did a wonderful job of collecting and storing her family photos so that I could one day digitize and share them}

Per someone's request. The #Tetragrammaton is derived from Tetractys, which means four. The word itself is aplay on the number 4. #Professor #Hilton mentions that "the #Secret Word was never pronounced; it was spelled, and expressed in four words, which are sacred words Yod-He-Vav-He." That four part word alludes to the four basic elements of the #universe: #Earth, Water, Fire and Air. These elements dominate the physical or material world (matter). 4 represents a square, the square represents the material realities. We also find 4 at the base off the #pyramid and in the figure of the #Sphinx. Hotema writes "The symbolical tetras, represented  in the #Ancient Mysteries by the 4 forms of the Sphinx--man, #Eagle, #Lion and #Bull--corresponded with the 4 principle elements of the universe. The #Freemasons and #Shriners are taught the significance of the 4 elements and it's relationship to the Tetragrammaton. . Hotema then states...."A greater #mystery is connected with the internal phase of the symbol, which dealt with the #Astral aspects that rise as the products of the functions of these four elements in the created body of man. These products are another one of the great mysteries of the universe. They appear as the Astral qualities of (1) vitality, (2) #consciousness, (3) #mind, and (4) #intelligence. In #Masonry the internal meaning of the four elements are represented by the Pyramid." The tetragrammaton also represents (1) human motivation, (2) human drives, (3) human sentiments, and (4) human aspirations. . As I've mentioned (count to the right stop at 13th post) concerning the Sacred Word. All dates for the wheel come from numbers coded in the Tetragrammaton of #Yahweh. The numbers from left to right are 5650. This is the B.C date for the #genealogy in #Genesis. 5650 B.C or 113 Jubilee, or 50 year periods. The numbers of the tetragrammaton from right to left are 10,565 this is the B.C date for the beginning Age of #Leo and beginning of the creation of man. 10,565+5650=4915 A.D which is the end date minus 3 years. It's called 3 years in the #Cherubim box and ends at 4918 A.D. This is also a Tetragrammaton of Yahweh #teachings. #Hebrew #YHWH #Jewish

A new week, a new family archive! Today is sorting day. When we first receive boxes of family papers, we take the time to organize and inventory the items on a spreadsheet so we can keep track of every last photo and card.
This morning we separated out the diaries, which will require scanning on either a flatbed scanner or a Shotbox. Deciding what scanner to use is important when considering the needs of our clients. Bound records are always the most time-consuming to scan. When very high-quality, high resolution images are required, we will take the time to use a flatbed. If the diaries can easily lay flat, and our client is happy with the output from a Shotbox, we will use that option.

Believe me, I have always felt every one of these #ethnicities since Day One. No doubt all of this is what revs me up to get cooking different things every day!!! #American #America #USA #NativeAmerican #Powhatan #Africa #IvoryCoast #Congo #DemocraticRepublicofCongo #SouthAfrica #Europe #Spain #Portugal #Italy #Britain #UK #England #huffposttaste #multicultural
