Why is it better to be a grasshopper than a cricket? Because a grasshopper can play cricket but a cricket can't play grasshopper! πŸ˜‚
.
Lord, was that corny or what?? Anyways, I have a beautiful grasshopper to show you today. This, my hopping hoppers, is a Common Milkweed Locust (genus: Phymateus; possible species: P. morbillosus). Found all over southern, eastern, and central Africa, these jack rabbits love to hang around in groups among open bushveld. They can grow up to 70-72mm in length and feed on highly toxic plants. Some species in this genus are capable of long migratory flights when maturity is reached, but females of this specific species actually can't fly at all despite having fully developed wings! When disturbed, these colorful wonders raise and rustle their wings, while also secreting a noxious fluid from their thoracic joint. They congregate in high numbers and can typically be spotted hanging out with their friends among milkweed bushes. What beautiful insects we have in this world! .
Thanks @caicedocamila for sending in this photo! PCVs, don't forget to send in photos of insect life you see!! Until next time 😜 Instagram Photos | videos | post
