How does yoga impact your mental health?

A study by Teker et al found that a consistent yoga practice reduced symptoms of depression and led to a significant increase in serotonin levels and a decrease in the levels of cortisol. At the University of Wisconsin, Richard Davidson, Ph.D., also found that the left prefrontal cortex showed heightened activity in meditators, a finding that has been correlated with greater levels of happiness and better immune function. More dramatic left-sided activation was found in dedicated, long-term practitioners.

I visited the students at the St Josephs school in Clare, South Australia with the intentions of trying to inspire them with the story of my journey so far and to talk about doing something for a cause. Super stoked that they were so interested and even spent their lunch break also staying to hear more, check out the bike set up and ask questions etc. What a fantastic day 😁

Sometimes we all keep stuff to ourselves and that’s ok but when it’s something that is slowly decaying and eating away at you and gradually causing ill health to you and your mind that’s when you need to speak out. Let’s get rid of the stigma that it’s weak to say something about mental health, of you have a problem talk to someone before it gets to bad. Don’t allow it to destroy you give yourself the tools to tackle it and get control over it. Once you’ve suffered with mental health problems you will never be the same but you will be a better and stronger person. Always believe in yourself and remember to talk to someone if you need to. Do you live your life only to get to the end of it? Most people answer this question with a ‘no’, but not everyone lives like they mean it. Most people have goal to get through the day instead of enjoying their day. Until you give up the idea that happiness or success is someplace else, it will never be where you are.

With this type of belief, it is an addiction to happiness deferred. It is the misplaced belief that you will be much happier as soon as you reach whatever goals you’ve set for yourself. It is recognized by an underlying anxiety in everything you do, an uneasy feeling that something is missing. You identify with your goal as the “something” that is missing and you are convinced that as soon as you get it, you will be much happier.

To overcome this you have to step back every now and then and be honest about the part you play in your own unhappiness. There's nothing wrong with having goals, creating vision boards and generally wanting more for your life. The problem comes when your definition of better is solely based on your next move i.e getting a corporate job, material things i.e buying a house and what looks good on paper i.e getting your degree.

We all have times where we fall into this trap where we have to convince ourselves that better times are ahead just to make it through the day. But the key to defeating destination addiction is to find happiness with the life you have and to achieve the goals that are important to YOU, not the ones you think will impress everyone else.

My god can I sleep 😂😂.
Landed lunchtime yesterday and had a nice walk around the area. Had a couple of beers too was so lovely.
Came back to the hotel room at about 5:30pm for a ‘power nap’ and woke up at 8am this morning 😂😂.
Already feeling the benefits of being away! Gunna have a nice chill day today, maybe read a book, listen to music etc.

I’m a 30 year old woman, wife to an amazing guy who’s the love of my life & mother to a 20-month-old daughter. We are currently residing in Japan until the end of December 2018. We are from New Jersey - forever will be a #jerseygirl no matter where I am, & I am proud of that!

I started this account & a blog (link in bio) as a way to share my story & connect with likeminded people. I am working on narrowing my topics, but I would say it’s all about my experiences as a woman first & foremost with motherhood/parenthood and mental health advocacy sprinkled in. I have a love for pretty photos, but I have no idea what I’m doing with a camera.. I just use the edit tab on here until I like the way it looks😂 I told my husband the other day that I would love to learn more about photography so that’s on my list of about a million things I would like to do in this lifetime🙂🤣 I also have started down the avenue of creative writing because I have always had a dream of writing a novel, but we all know that it takes time, energy & focus - things a new mom sometimes lack🤣 Not saying it won’t happen, but I have to be kind to myself since I’ve got other priorities at the moment💕

Otherwise, I’m a top knot advocate👱‍♀️, I run on coffee☕️, love a good sweat💦, summer & fall weather (you can keep the winter if you want, but I deal with it because I have to, & I love where we live & snowboarding!), getting lost in a novel & the beach is my happy place (Cape May County, NJ has my heart). Yes, pumpkin spice is life, and I love a good golden hour. Christmaa season starts on Black Friday because Thanksgiving is amazing so you stay away with your tinsel until then. (If you’re not American, you get a pass on this rule haha) I can’t comprehend looking fancy every day, but I love to feel pretty & confident. I am Catholic, and my faith is important to me, but I mostly try to live that by leading my life with love - something that can be universally understood regardless of your religion.

I was a customer but because I LOVE these products I eventually became a not so serious independent distributor. I was at the top of my career in higher education but I knew my health may decline and that this extra income could be very helpful at some point. I’m not going to lie, I had an ego. I was a college advisor and program navigator w/ 8 years of experience and job stability. My biggest question in life was whether or not to complete a Masters degree. 
In the summer of 2015 I became anemic due to having fibroids which only made my MS flare ups and fatigue worse. I ended up having surgery and a really rough recovery. Between all of the above, a change in MS Disease Modification Drugs to slow the progression of the disease and the daily stress of life, MS just got worse. I was spending all of my time and energy on my career then crashing on the couch as soon as I got home. I was a lot of fun! I would recoup over the weekends to try and make it through another work week. January 2016 came and that was when stuff needed to change. At the time my daughter began to really struggle. It was her Sophomore year of high school and her Anxiety (OCD) and depression were at an all time high, a battle we have been combating since she was 11.  You think your kids get older and they need you less but that is not the case. They need you more and in an emotional way. She needed me, my husband needed me and I needed me to start caring for myself. I was just a job and a disease at that point. 
I needed this business to work...it was my solution to so many of my problems. I was tired of being sick all the time and having to even ask to be excused from work is a bummer. I felt as if I had no control over what was happening around me anymore. So from January to May of 2016 I hustled my butt off and became able to work FT from home. My family as a whole is in a much better place. My daughter still has her struggles but she is doing so much better. I have the energy to spend with my family that I didn’t have for a long time. Now if I wake up not feeling well I can do what ever I may need to feel better. We save more money now than ever and we live debt free!

Nail biting.

These are my nails a week ago; long, healthy & beautiful. I would show them off proud to my friends and family like: «guys, look how long my nails have grown!».

Everyone would congratulate me, tell me how proud they are, I didn’t even have triggers or the urge to bite again. I thought it was forever as I had been bite free for almost a year. I felt powerful, capable of overcoming anything.

If you swipe left you’ll see my nails today. Not long, not healthy & not beautiful; plus they hurt like hell. But they are mine, and I love them. I’ll take care of them taking care of myself, I don’t know how long it will take but they will grow again.

Everybody experiences fear - some in a huge way, some in a less threatening way. But it‘s not the avoidance of fear that brings us release, but the journeying through emotional pain in order to digest it. That‘s crucial in healing. Avoidance creates resistance. Resistance creates huge blockages in our entire life! 
LOVE, acceptance and self-empowerment are the healers.

Dare to dive in and accept that everything - the good, the bad, the ugly - is part of something greater. I know it can be hard, but as long as we‘re in victim mode, we unnecessarily create more drama and are holding ourself back from growth.

Life is full of irony. Part of my talks covers how I taught myself not to smile in my youth as a way to hide a perceived weakness. Ironically now that I want to smile I'm battling Bells Palsy. We're constantly changing, what is right for us one year could be different the following. This leaves plenty of room for irony to grow. The important thing is seeing how far we've come and where we want to go on this wild journey. And irony is just the joker that keeps us in check. 🃏

*Mental Health Awareness Post*

I’ve been away from this space and I haven’t made time to sing covers because I wasn’t in the best of spirits lately.

I went on a solo trip to the UK in September because I couldn’t take much more of working endlessly. I came back resenting my life even more. I wasn’t living my highest potential and I could not find the light in myself nor anything I did. 
Not to get things confused; I love my patients and I love caring for them but I’ve been mindlessly working my ass off (started off as studying my ass off) for the past 10 years. That’s a lot of time to be busting your ass over something that doesn’t feel quite authentic to yourself. Doesn’t help that the system is a mess and everyone just wants to work the bare minimum without helping each other out. 
I’ve seen many sides of mental health disorders; personally and professionally. And I’ve decided to make a change. I’ve lived all my life in a culture that makes fun of people who speak about their troubles  and emotions, sweeps problems under the rug, solves problems by creating new ones, denies the existence of mental health issues because they’re too dim to understand one. 
I’m not proud to say that I advice my patients and family to go all out to foster their mental health and have fiercely advocated against stigmatisation but I haven’t done the same for myself. 
I’m tired and jaded from not living my truth and up till now I was embarrassed to talk about it openly. But time is running out and I can choose not to live like this any longer. I choose to speak/sing/draw/text/write about anything and everything that brings light in my life. And I hope it inspires and gives the people around me the strength to do the same. 
So for today, this mural was the light in my bleak day. It was painted some 20 years ago by the nurses who worked at my hospital in order to bring some color to the lives of the patients who lived in that ward. I could not have been more pleased to have stumbled across it.

I’m tired and jaded from not living my truth and up till now I was embarrassed to talk about it openly. But time is running out and I can choose not to live like this any longer. I choose to speak/sing/draw/text/write about anything and everything that brings light in my life. And I hope it inspires and gives the people around me the strength to do the same. So for today, this mural was the light in my bleak day. It was painted some 20 years ago by the nurses who worked at my hospital in order to bring some color to the lives of the patients who lived in that ward. I could not have been more pleased to have stumbled across it. Light and love.

I'm coming to think of aging as a process of peeling off layers of false self. Although painful, I feel so much lighter, freer. I was taught that only weak people cry. The other day tears kept coming up. What's this? Then I realized that I am being more vulnerable in a group than I've ever been in my life. The tears are a good thing, not a bad thing. But you are right. A mast can be as revealing as a projection!

Lately I've been missing YouTube! When I was 13, I started my first channel on which I reviewed Korean pop music. Eventually I switched to a vlog channel in college, but I kinda stopped making videos because I didn't have direction anymore. 😵

I really miss being able to look back visually on things I do with people I love! And video is becoming even more of an important media tool. So who's down for a mental health channel?
