Inspired by @ashcollinnns , a few days ago was #mentalhealthawarenessday A lot of you guys already know this story about me but I’ve struggled with depression for most of my young adult life and I got this tattoo where I did to stop myself from cutting myself there again. Of all the tattoos I have, this one will always be my favorite because it is a constant reminder that in February, I’ll be 2 years sober from self-harm. When this photo was taken, I was in one of the most beautiful places in the world....but also in one of the darkest times in my life. 6 months ago, I was struggling with anxiety and depression that seemed to come at me out of nowhere, and these issues destroyed relationships and made me feel like I would never be capable of loving someone the way I was loved. Mental health is not only a political issue to me, but a personal one. I'm lucky to be on medication and to have professional help to confront my issues head-on and enjoy my beautiful life and everyone in it #MentalHealthAwarenessDay

I wrote this in a journal back in the year 2011 February 25th, two days after I wrote this my cousin passed away at the age of 23 in a car accident. "I do not know how to describe how sad I am in detail exacty, but I will try. Imagine a single tree at the bottom of a hill in an open field that is abandoned never used for anything, there is some grass around the tree, no bushes can be found near it. This tree has gone through all of the seasons back and forth alone. In summer the breeze runs through the tree somewhat but not always. In the fall its leaves die quicker because it is tired and cannot bear to hold onto them any longer. In the winter its bark cracks a little more than usual because of how weak it is, it is almost lifeless. In the spring it tries to grow back its leaves, but it does so alone."

So a tiny bit of back ground.. I started this page as I wanted a place I felt that I could be myself. I've had a tricky few years finishing my degree raising a child and working full and part time I have often forgotten the 'self care' aspect of life. I started this page after I fostered a love of interior design and spending a lot of time completing DIY projects around my little home that I wanted to share. Today is my birthday. 9 years ago I wanted to kill myself on this day, instead I decided to become a #warrior and battle it out. Today I can confidently say I do not have those thoughts anymore, but I can also recognize patience is important in recovery and you should understand this too if you have ever had these thoughts before like me! There is hope at the end of the tunnel. No, I am not 100% better, but I can say today this is how I feel, and it feels great to not have those thoughts anymore! I hope I can continue to provide self help videos in the future and also inspire others by telling my own story and journey which might motivate others as well! When your path is not clear...do this... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Too often we find ourselves muddling through our days / weeks like ants feeling their way towards and end goal one step at a time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Then there are times of clarity and strength where we move forward with confidence ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here are some thoughts on how to get through the former and experience more of the latter... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Step 1: Know, really know and think about how the path will clear up at some point. Sometimes it takes a while, but the clouds always eventually pass. ‘This too shall pass’ can get you through a lot ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Step 2: Tap into your support network. In ‘The EDGE Program’, we refer to this as your ‘Force Field’. It’s something worth building when you’re doing well so you can tap into it if you begin to struggle. By tap into it, we mean bounce ideas off and strategize, and less of seeking sympathy ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Step 3: Refocus on your wellness. Just like yogi’s call it a ‘yoga practice’, we believe we can all have a ‘wellness practice’. Instead of taking the easy path of social media, junk food (aka immediate gratification), make an effort in these times to fuel your body/brain with high quality food, some movement and solid rest. It’s amazing the difference it can make, even over the course of one day ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Step 4: Keep moving forward. Like a plane flying through a set of clouds, if you keep moving, you’ll come out the other side into clarity and strength. They say a good sailor isn’t made by sailing calm waters, so embrace the experience and keep moving forward with a growth mindset ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Final Thoughts: Clouds of confusion are normal and happen to all of us, which is why it’s important to have tools and strategies to come out the other side. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We hope this helps and would love to hear your ideas on what you’d add to this list. Tips to Manage Stress and Anxiety at Work Getting stressed out at work happens to everyone, and it’s perfectly normal. But stress that is persistent, irrational, and overwhelming and impairs daily functioning may indicate an anxiety disorder. Keep these ideas in mind to keep your work life manageable: * Work! In addition to financial reasons, working can be important for your self-esteem and it adds to your social identity. * Tell a trusted coworker. Knowing that someone accepts your condition can be comforting and it may reduce any anticipatory anxiety about having a panic attack at work. * Educate yourself. Learn to recognize the symptoms of your disorder and how to handle them if you experience any at work. * Practice time management. Make to-do lists and prioritize your work. Schedule enough time to complete each task or project. * Plan and prepare. Get started on major projects as early as possible. Set mini-deadlines for yourself. Anticipate problems and work to prevent them. * Do it right the first time. Spend the extra time at the outset and save yourself a headache later when you have to redo your work. * Be realistic. Don’t over commit or offer to take on projects if you don’t realistically have enough time. * Ask for help. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, ask a coworker for help. Signs of Workplace Bullying . 1. Actions that disrupt the communication process. The persecutor criticises the private life and work of the victim. It often interferes with the expression of one’s own opinion, interrupts while speaking, tries to prevent the voice from being heard or shouts out. Mobber can also commit written threats (email, text messages, instant messaging) and even verbal threats so that the persecuted person feels intimidated. . 2. Actions that disrupt social relations. Mobber avoids talking to his victim, ignores them, forbids others to speak to them and exaggerates them from other workers or places them in a remote room. These activities lead to the elimination of the victim from the team. . 3. Actions that damage an employee’s reputation. Mobber starts to dissolve rumours and laugh at the victim. The subject of mockery and rumour may be the disability, gender, race, religion, political opinion or sexual orientation suggested by the persecutor. The persecutor may start to question the employee’s skills and commission him/her to do work that reduces his/her self-esteem. Mobber can send a victim for a psychiatric examination, parody his behaviour to ridicule, mock his religion or skin colour, invent offensive names for the victim and use them officially. Verbal sexual suggestions are also possible. . 4. Actions that undermine the quality of life and of work. The persecutor commissions his victim to carry out tasks below his or her qualifications, makes useless and pointless work, or even does not carry out any work, because he or she wants the victim to understand that he or she is not needed for anything. Sometimes the opposite is true – the persecutor gives the victim too much work, sometimes impossible for one person to do or work that exceeds the victim’s competence. . 5. Activities that have a detrimental effect on the safety and health of the victim. Mobber commissions his victim to work that is harmful to their health, physically harasses them, threatens them or even uses violence (harassment also occurs). . 🦖 Have a great...and FEROCIOUS Friday! - - had to do it lol. Doing a little reflecting today. Can't stress enough how glad I am that I went through all my struggles of social anxiety. Without all that pain, I would not be where I am right now. 👫 I met my wife because of it. 🤱 We have 3 children because of it. 💪 I am so MUCH mentally stronger because of it. 😬 I know that when you are going through pain, especially with mental health issues like social anxiety, you can feel like it is never going to get better. 🙏 Trust me on this: EVERYTHING happens for a reason! You are going through pain right now and you will gain so much from it in the end. Be patient and keep fighting! 💪 No pain. No gain.

The Dos and Don’ts of handling someone going through a panic attack . Do . Do remind the person having a panic attack that they are in no way obligated to stay where they are. They can leave if they are panicking about something or feel uncomfortable. Offer them a ride home if necessary after observing the person’s current mental capacity. Absolutely don’t pressure them to do something they don’t want to do. . Do assure them there is nothing to be afraid of. Someone experiencing a panic attack will probably find it a lot harder to rationalize the fact that there’s no real reason to be panicking, that’s the sad truth. Remind them they are completely safe and that you are there to help them through this. . Do let them know that it’s only temporary. Panic attacks don’t and will never last forever. Despite the terrible mental state the sufferer might be in, it’s comforting to know that it will go away soon. . Do encourage them to breathe. Breathing is particularly difficult during a panic attack and someone experiencing it could forget to breathe properly. Tell them to take a deep breath in for four seconds, then let it out for four seconds and repeat. Breathing helps, but it only helps when done correctly. . Do attempt to have an engaging conversation with them. Chances are if you’re a friend, you know what piques the person’s interest. Try to casually bring the topic up. Don’t bombard the person in a panic attack with a lengthy conversation as this could be overwhelming, but try to slowly capture their interest and lure them away from the feeling of panic. . Do stay with them. If the person panicking wants you to leave, it’s most likely the anxiety talking. More often than not, a panic attack only gets worse if the person is left alone to suffer through their own thoughts. Stay by their side no matter what. . What Companies Can Do To Reduce Stress In The Workplace . There are several steps that companies can take to reduce the impact of burnout on their employees. It all starts with figuring out what the most common sources of burnout are for their own employees since every company is different. From there, they can pursue the following strategies. Acknowledge that the problem exists. "Employee burnout is real, and all are at risk for this problem," says Quick. "Early intervention is best, so as employees reach a yellow zone for burnout, that’s the time to make referrals or maybe turn down the pressure put on them and the pressure they self-generate." Create a work environment where employees feel listened to, empowered, and appreciated on a daily basis. Labier suggests that this begins with management culture: "Exclude toxic, arrogant, and narcissistic bosses. Promote collaboration, support for learning and development, a fair reward system, transparency, promotion of diversity, etc." . Emphasize wellness initiatives that focus on both physical and mental health. A good healthcare plan, healthy food provided on site, and covered gym/yoga memberships are good examples. Employers can also do things like pay for meditation apps or sessions for employees and provide quiet rooms where employees can do a mental reset. . Offer a flexible working environment: for instance, allow employees to choose their own hours, work from home when needed, and take time off regularly. "Ensure that people have time off, respites from work, and emotional support on the job," says Quick. "Burnout results from working or striving for too long and/or with too much effort and energy expenditure." Encourage non-work activities. "Burnout is best prevented when people have things that excite them, energize them, and bring them renewals…whatever that is." explains Quick. "Encourage employees to have non-work interests and activities that offer balance and alternative sources of renewal." .....

Mental health tip for today: Speak to your doctor. 🏵 Some people ask me what to do if they feel anxious and have felt like it for some time. 🍇 They explain their symptoms to me and I can relate 100%. 🦄 The hardest thing I did for myself was talk to my doctor. 🐙 Luckily they also recognised the signs and signed me off work. 🎀 I was prescribed medication and have not looked back since. 👋 SO - all in all, take that jump and go to your doctor. They are best placed to help you. 🌌 I can give you my experience but I can help cure you. Why We Should All Care About Employees' Mental Health . Other than the utilitarian financial reasons, Quick adds, there's a "moral or humanitarian" component. "People are intrinsically important." Lynn Hamilton, Chief Commercial Officer at online therapy company Talkspace, says, "Roughly one in five people have a diagnosable mental health condition, and these numbers run parallel in the workplace. Yet, the vast majority of people either don’t seek treatment, are misdiagnosed or don’t get the adequate treatment they need." . You may know these employees, work with them, or be one yourself. It's an important issue to care about because the ripple effects are wide. And it's certainly worth caring about on the institutional level as well. Business psychologist and psychotherapist Douglas Labier, Ph.D., has dedicated decades to studying the connection between people's work and their mental/emotional health, and working personally with those affected. . “It does not have to be by the book - relationships” For the longest time I thought I had to follow an ideal. An ideal about how relationships should be.
