A poem inspired by the image above and a prayer.

The Man Child ...Still

The contours around 
his eyes are cracked 
with smile tracks.
They hide internal
frowns, a well-worn 
mask.

Speaking to please,
he engages in many a 
tiresome task for 
accolades and praise. 
Still, his inner man
hears the voices of dread,
feels dad’s hands hitting 
his head. He wants to run, 
but no where is there to hide.

So he fakes strength 
and a life of fun.
Anything goes for
ecstasy and mirth.

Still, his inner child
dreads the break of day 
sits cross-legged, 
head buried as in sand,
wishing he would die or be
blown away.

#wip shots i never posted from when i participated in #inktober2018 -  this piece is very close to my heart bc i actually got the concept from speaking to a woc w multiple personalities. It was really an amazing experience listening to her story ... I always try to slip some mental health based metaphors in my illustrations bc representation truly matters for poc. Our mental health is NOT prioritized in our society. We exist and live in a constant battle yet mental health for some of us isn't a concern? Some believe they are going it alone when truly there are many others who have lived amazing lives despite their circumstances. Raise awareness!!

I’ve been a little quiet on social media this week. And I plan to be even quieter next week. The truth is I had another terrifying depressive episode on Saturday. It knocked me for six. And made me scared and ashamed.

I need some timeout. I’m trying to work out how to blog etc in a way that is good for me. And I can only do that by stepping away for a bit.

My blog was always meant to be a form of therapy. Yet lately it’s become a chore and I’m not sure that’s good for my mental health.

I need to take some time off. I need to sit back and remember why I love to blog. I need to know that my blog is helping me as much as it is helping others.

As a result, this is me signing off for a week. Please don’t go anywhere. I will be back. But I need a break. And to put my mental health first.

It is a constant source of disappointment that many of us are having to prove we have a Mental Health condition because we can string three words together or we get dressed.

I have heard on here so many times about people being told "Well you can dress yourself" "You look okay" "You dont look like you struggle" And this can be a real and genuine source of upset and invalidation of conditions that are already reduced at the slightest hint of being able to do anything. I’ve been reflecting a lot on making space for our wants and needs. As humans we all have the same basic desires, but digging down deeper and exploring what sets our soul on fire is what makes us different.🦋🐞🦄

Writing down what our hopes, dreams, and goals helps to create a clearer picture. No, it won’t change your life overnight but it does help paint a picture of the future. The possibilities are endless even on our “bad” days.🌿🌈🧘🏼‍♀️⚡️

Quite often I see people in practice who are continually striving to reach that next extraordinary milestone or achievement.

Often these are the Type A personalities. Often these are the people suffering from fatigue! They are driven individuals, who push themselves beyond what the body is comfortable with, often seeing the results in negative health outcomes.

What drives these people to such extremes? Would it not be more beneficial to be able to see the JOY in those everyday events we take for granted?

For me personally, my mental health suffers if I neglect one of the following for too long: diet, exercise, meditation, social connection, sleep. If I can keep those things in check then I’m generally in a really good place.

Reducing screen time, alcohol and stress can also be a massive help.
.
But sometimes you will be doing everything right and still your mental health can suffer. Just know that this is OK. We are complex individuals, all wired differently.
.
If you really are struggling then always reach out to someone. There are people that can help. Realise deeply that mental health problems are common and normal.
.
Meditation styles that trigger the Relaxation Response (the bodies opposite to the Fight or Flight mechanism) are proven to help with depression, anxiety and a whole host of other mental health issues. If you haven’t tried meditation yet, then maybe now is s good time? .

For me personally, my mental health suffers if I neglect one of the following for too long: diet, exercise, meditation, social connection, sleep. If I can keep those things in check then I’m generally in a really good place. . Reducing screen time, alcohol and stress can also be a massive help. . But sometimes you will be doing everything right and still your mental health can suffer. Just know that this is OK. We are complex individuals, all wired differently. . If you really are struggling then always reach out to someone. There are people that can help. Realise deeply that mental health problems are common and normal. . Meditation styles that trigger the Relaxation Response (the bodies opposite to the Fight or Flight mechanism) are proven to help with depression, anxiety and a whole host of other mental health issues. I read a number of posts that suggest that we are attention seekers.

I would be the first to agree that a few years ago when I did not have the understanding that I have now, I would post to gain the love that I did not have or validation.

It was a product of child abuse that created that belief.

How many times over the years have I compared myself to others and felt ruined as a result... I asked myself this question yesterday as I stepped out of the house in the dark early hours and the rain and narrowly avoided stepping on a large slug on his own journey to cross the pavement. Wow I thought, seriously, I am a physically healthy human living in a first world country,  but I could have been born as a slug, right now I am based in Cumbria in the UK, I could have been born as one of the many sheep I see on my travels every day, forced to stand outside all day in all weathers with maybe a wall to shelter against when the weather gets to bad. I pass a white horse every day spending its life alone in a small patch of fenced off field, I could have been born that lonely creature, or I could have been born a dog who lives with an abusive owner, i Pittied them all and felt a rush of gratitude and relief for having been reminded I am born at the very top of the food chain and knowing the power is with me to make the most of the priceless opportunity without torturing myself over how others may judge me for how I go about doing that...

This is raw, but it’s real. The top picture is real tears, real heartache, real pain. Actually excruciating pain. The bottom picture is a real smile, real happiness, real joy. Why am I showing this? Because it’s #mentalhealthawarenessday and this real life. I want to raise awareness how I can. It’s important to share experiences and show each other how we can overcome the struggles of life. Especially when those moments are so lonely. Why did I take this picture? I actually sent it via whatsapp when I couldn’t cope. I didn’t know what to do. It was my way of saying help! I kept the picture to remind me that no one should ever have the right to reduce you to this kind of pain & tears. It’s a reminder that I can get through anything even when I’m at my lowest. 
About a month ago, one part of my life broke down and then the rest started to fall down around me. At one point I thought, why bother carrying on with life if it’s this painful. WHAT WAS I THINKING? This isn’t me?! I’m strong. We can all break down & sometimes we don’t even know it’s coming. Life can take you by surprise. A month on & I’m  healing, life is getting better & I have a different perspective. Our scars make us who we are. We need to talk about mental health. We need to share more ways of coping. We keep it to ourselves a lot of the time and it can eat us up. 
This isn’t a pity party. I don’t want you to feel sympathy for me. This isn’t about attention. This is about sharing. Yes this shows my vulnerable side. But those who care for you will take care of your vulnerable side and support you and help you through, not ignore it or tear you down. There is always a way out. You WILL get through it. You just need to be prepared to fight for yourself! Fight for who you are and what you want in life. 👊🏼❤️ this is a reminder you’re not alone! 
Here’s how I helped get my strength back. • Download books. Read self-help books that can give you a different perspective on a situation. • listen to motivational talks on YouTube everyday
• Practice daily gratitude. You’ll realise there’s so much more worth living for • make a list of realistic goals • go dates with yourself.

A few days ago was #mentalhealthawarenessday & I so badly wanted to make a post & say a few things about it but my anxiety got the best of me. Recently I had a talk with my pastor about my mental health & the state I’m in. It was a huge eye opener. For so long I’ve been told “You need to be an example of a “perfect” Christian. Act as if you live in a glass house & everyone can see everything you do.” For so long my life has been constant questions of “Is this okay to wear?” “Is this post polished enough?” Over the years I’ve become more anxious about the things I put out for the world to see. I didn’t realize I was letting my pride control me so much until it was brought to my attention. This is me pushing my pride aside & being real. This is me being me & not the “cute” , “polished” girl you always see on your feed. I have cystic acne that I always cover with make up & I style my hair to hide as much of it as I can. My eyebrows are never done bc it’s too painful & it makes me break out really bad due to sensitive skin. I have acne scars all over my face. My teeth are not the perfect shade of white no matter how many different teeth whitening treatments I do. My weight has always fluctuated & I’ve never been 100% comfortable with it. Some days I wake up & hate absolutely everything in life. Some days I wake up so excited for the day & as happy as can be. For the first time I’m saying this openly (& absolutely terrified to admit to all of you), I’ve been dealing with depression & some pretty bad anxiety for a little over a year. Every day is a new day & all I can do is pray & surround myself with lots of love & positivity. I have an amazing group of people in my life who are constantly checking on me & truly want the best for me. Thanks for loving me, y’all are rockstars! Remember to always check on your friends & loved ones. You never know when they might need some encouragement!💛 “The sun will rise and we will try again...” 🌞

Bit late on the #mentalhealthawarenessday post but I myself struggle with mental illness as does many people and I know it will never fully go away or will I be cured from my personal demons but It helps to know I have people around me whom love me and get me through the dark times and dark thoughts. Just remember you are not alone and you are stronger than you think. Your mental wellbeing is just as important as physical wellbeing. Sincerely from a woman who often hides behind a smile... 💕

So this year I really took a step away from social media, because life happened and it was messing with my mental health (and that shiz just got too much!) 🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️😓 _

Don’t get me wrong I LOVE connecting with you all! Always! 🤗
But it’s very easy to get to a point where social media can consume you. I got to a point where I HAD to post every day, I was obsessed with how many “likes” I got on posts and I would get stressed if I missed a post, or if some of my posts didn’t do well. 👎👎😑 _

On top of that I started comparing myself to so many other profiles and it made me feel like I wasn’t good enough. 🤯🤯🤯 _

This happens to SO many people all too often. I got to the point where I needed a DETOX from social media. 
I recommend everyone does this from time to time, whether it’s a few days, a week, a month or months depending on what you feel you need. 🤓💯 _

You should be able to connect And disconnect when you feel you want to, without stressing out about it. Make sure you reassess and check yoursellllff from time to time. If social media starts effecting your mental health in any way shape or form, it’s time to take a little break, reset, and realise that you need to live your best life with or without Instagram 😉😘 _

i know #mentalhealthawarenessday was the other day but for those who don’t know i battle with tons of mental disorders. i honestly hate the way my body looks, how my teeth look and everything else. yes i know you might say i look beautiful and etc but i dont feel that way. the little things people compliment me on, hugs or just other things make me feel good inside. i try everyday to keep a smile on my face but on the inside i dont feel happy. one thing i mostly have is depression, its like little monsters in my head everyday keeping me feeling low but we all have our battles

A message for #MentalHealthAwarenessDay,, but I’m laTE AS CRAP (as per usual) and sorry that I keep posting doodles !! This is p important tho.. Hi I’m Angela and I have depression (a weak form,, it’s from loneliness) & anxiety (social-based,, I.e I have trouble making friends,, and I’m super awkward in social situations and constantly feel like everyone hates me and everyone’s focusing on my imperfections and mistakes). If you feel like ur the same,, don’t be afraid to ask for help!! It’s better than trying to take it on alone (trust me I know). And if you ever get suicidal thoughts PLS GET HELP AND DONT DENY IT there are tons of suicide helplines n stuff for children and maybe get a therapist and talk to a council. I got help and it was waaay better than taking it on by myself. It didn’t ‘fix’ my anxiety,, i still worry when I have to present things to my class,, go to parties etc etc but it did help me understand that this is who I am and I should accept it. I’m different and that’s okay✨The mental health community is also super accepting and if u feel something’s not right please talk to someone. Thanks for reading all of you did, you’re epic owo💕💕💕

As you probably know it was #mentalhealthawarenessday last week. I still think this issue deserves to be talked about much more than one day a year, so I wanted to share my own experience with mental health. After almost dropping out completely, second year ended with my first run in with depression and anxiety. I kept a lid on it for far too long before I even admitted it to myself, but only once you’ve opened up can you begin to heal. Took me more or less a whole summer of being around my family to get back to my normal self, but taking that time is exactly what needed to be done. Being around the most important people in your life gives you a sense that things will be okay. Big love to my nearest and dearest for always having my back ♥️

While this was happening, I completely stopped going to the gym, so this is my (late) #transformationtuesday as well. But this transformation is about so much more than just putting on a bit of muscle. It’s hard to put into words how much changed mentally between these two photos. I realised the importance of doing the things that give you joy, no matter what that is. I went far too long without that, and it showed me just how much it matters. Exercising and eating well show you that you matter, and helps you feel proud of taking care of yourself. My mum always said “you can’t love until you love yourself”. I always used it as an excuse for my vanity, but I’ve come to realise it means a lot more than that. You can’t love life until you learn to love yourself. Be kind to yourself, so that you can be kind to other. Do things that make you happy, and share your happiness with others. But most importantly, never be afraid to speak out and share your sadness.

For many people, every day is a struggle in our own minds, but it is so important to take small steps. It feels like they won’t make a difference, but when you put one after the other you will see changes. Something as simple as going to the gym or making yourself your favourite meal can be a way of coping and taking that first step 👣

Day 3: Cancer Awareness Day. I chose pink for Breast Cancer in honor of my mother who is a survivor. The shirt hasn't been worn since I ran a 10k back in 2014. Depression is condition of prolonged sadness that effects how people think, behave, and function. 
Paul Gilbert also said that depression is a puzzling phenomenon not only can it lead to the extremely unpleasant state of mind, it also may affacted a person's interest in activites, work, and quality of life. It can happen to anyone. 
Today when we use the word 'depression' we dont differentiate between a clinical diagnosed mental illness and simply a state of sadness that may not meet medical criteria. However, the world health organization suggest that depression will soon become second only to cardiovascular disease as the most common health burdens in the world

“#mentalhealthawarenessday because i’m not sure how many of you are aware of my own mental illness unless you follow my finsta lol. it’s really hard to find a photo of me grinning because tbh these past six years i’ve found it incredibly hard to find happiness. i never spoke about my anxiety or depression or PTSD because, perhaps like so many others, i didn’t know what to say about it. but it’s important that i say something, because my mental illness is a part of who i am: i wake up and go to bed with these little monsters every day. 
like virginia woolf said so poignantly, i am mixed with an unknown winter. & all i can hope for is that one day spring will come and melt away the snow, albeit probably with the assistance of some SSRIs and lots of self-care.

The money raised was awesome, since it will help further the underfunded cause of fighting for the rights of people suffering from Mental Health issues, however that we reached even ONE person and helped the means the world!

That had you seeing stars in & out of the bedroom

That made every person who tried to holler look inadequate
That wasn’t nearly as concerned about what others thought & more about how you made me feel
That doesn’t have the luxury of mindless coitus
That has complete rando’s thinking it’s ok to ask what I am, what I’m sporting, if I’m “this” or “that” as if it’s any of their business
That’s on the receiving end of beautiful creatures screaming their orientations even though I never asked
That isn’t a freak but is very much freaky
That isn’t a fetish but has many
That isn’t an experiment even when tempted
That isn’t afraid even when warranted
That has to deal with insincere people wanting relationships just to prove to themselves that they’re as trendy, hip, oppressed, & tolerant as they’d like to be portrayed as
