Stiff Neck? {self mob technique} 💫 . (Video sped up 1.5x ...GO SLOWER!) . Chances are at one time or another you've experienced a stiff/sore neck. Barring that you don't have a cervical disc herniation (you got checked out, right?) most of the time these issue are related to either a ☝🏻tissue tension issue - muscle - or a ✌🏻joint issue - "stuck" vertebrae. . Rotation 🌀is often one of the major motions that is affected with a neck issue so a a quick, at home mobilization you can do yourself is based on a Mulligan technique. . 🎥First, palpate (poke😉) the bony prominences on your neck, chances are you'll find a tender one that most likely correlates to where you're feeling sore 📍loop either a towel or a mobility band around the back of your neck at that level 📍if you're having trouble turning to the RIGHT hold that side of the towel steady and slightly pulling forward📍gently pull with more force from the LEFT side across your bod📍this brings you further into right rotation with assistance and helps mobilize the joints . 📍You can also add a traction component by pulling the towel up and across without switching hands OR you can cross your hands 🙅🏻📍using the same example, trouble turning to RIGHT 📍your RIGHT hand will now cross on top of your left arm 📍grasp the towel over your LEFT shoulder 📍gently pull this part of the towel up and across towards your eyes to get a bit of traction/rotation combo. . If hamstrings are tight for you try a wide leg forward fold instead with maybe the support of a chair. ✨ - Yesterday, we trained the DNF in a supine position. Today we move to prone and add some shoulder motion with it. Go slow and keep the chin tucked throughout. 👍🏼 - In this video I show a progression from arms by sides to elbows bent to overhead. Start just with the hands by the sides holding for 15-60 seconds at a time. TRY OUT THIS NECK STRETCH . Where my Desk Life peeps at? This one's for you. And since I missed #DeskStretchMondays yesterday, I'm making up for it here. One of the biggest factors I've found in chronic neck tension is that we are constantly 🤷‍♀️shrugging our shoulders up to our ears. Especially after sitting and working on our computers for long hours.💻 . So we can stretch our neck out all day, but if we don't figure out that shrug, it's all going to be just a temporary fix. And one of the easiest ways to figure out how to release your shoulders down is to incorporate the movement into the stretch you're already doing. . So instead of just grabbing your head and pulling over, I want you to shrug all the way ⬆️up so you learn what that end range is, and then reach ⬇️down to the ground so you learn to go the other way. You can hold that statically or even better, you can pulse the shoulder up and down and get some reps in. . Then, now that you know what it feels like to have your shoulders dropped, try to replicate it when you go back to work. Add some good belly breathing on top of that and you'll be on your way to finding more long term neck relief.😀 . It’s a sensitive area and if you don’t feel comfortable doing it please find a local professional! - 👉SCM is short for sternocleidomastoid, and it attaches from the skull to the collarbone and sternum. As a follow up to my last post this is how to make your workstation comfortable . The subtle differences are the basic causes of worsening low back pain when you sit and upper back/neck and shoulder blade pain when you are operating a computer. Note that for paper people...if u know u know.. the laptop law applies to you also... * table height Should be high enough that you don't have to lean forward and not to high that you feel like you need to climb it.😂 - placing your palm, wrist and fore arm they should lined up straight(not dropping or raised) slight wrist drops or raises are not to be taken for granted. How to use it: Your legs should be under the table with your chest close to the edge *seat height Should be same as your feet-knee (from the ground) so that your knee isn't towering above waist level. In other words the lesser the seat depth, the more comfortable it is. So the nice soft chair isn't exactly ideal for sitting straight. - back support: this is more important than any chair rule and can greatly reduce the need to observe the others. USE THE BACK-REST to support your lower back, rather that seat on the edge of your seat, if you are not getting any support from the chair, get a lumbar support. This works wonder in reducing and preventing most low back pain trust me. - arm support. It should be about the same height as your table and should be to long to prevent you from sliding your chair and legs under the tyanle as you use them. *monitor/laptop and books: They are often better placed about eye level to prevent neck and upper back strain. You need a stand dedicated to that use... Yes even for those textbooks you are reading...with the exception for if youwant to write on them, then they should be on the same level as the keyboard would be. In the last post we focused on stiffness in the C7-T1 junction. If this isn’t mobilized, the muscles around the neck—sternocleidomastoid (SCM), scalenes, upper trapezius—will tighten up and get locked in. Therefore, they must be stretched and loosened up once the C7-T1 junction is mobilized, otherwise the head will end up stuck in a forward position and the neck pain will return. . 1️⃣ When both SCM muscles contract, the head is flexed forward, so tightness on both sides exacerbates forward flexion of the neck at rest. When the SCM on one side contracts, the face is turned to the opposite side. Therefore, when stretching out the SCM, it’s important to remember to tilt the head back and anchor the SCM while moving the clavicle and upper ribs downward (inferiorly) to release the muscle. . 2️⃣ While the scalenes are responsible for forward flexion of the neck, they also elevate the ribs. Therefore, if these muscles remain tight, they not only pull on the cervical vertebrae back into flexion, but also elevate the first two ribs. Since the first two ribs attach to T1 and T2, respectively, chronically tight scalenes will lead to stiffness in the C7-T1 junction that’s likely to spread down the upper back. During this mobilization, Dr. Letgolts anchors the inferior portion of scalenes and uses the upper rib rotation caused by the arm movement to increase the stretch. . 3️⃣ Since the upper traps are primarily involved in the elevation of the scapula, an upper trap stretch is fairly straightforward. However, keep in mind that the scapula should be kept in a retracted position (against the ribcage) as shown, to get a more effective stretch—this would also hit the levator scapulae. . Key takeaway: the root cause of someone’s pain is often multi-faceted. It isn’t enough to simply deal with joint stiffness or muscle tightness. As both are very closely related, it must be important to address both issues in order to achieve longer-lasting results.

Not only is cupping therapeutic, its also diagnostic! The change in color indicates the area of the body with poor circulation. As you can see with the neck, the upper neck is much less dark than the lower neck and shoulders. And you can also see the lowest right cup mark on the back is the darkest, indicating more stagnation in the right lower back. Next time, we’ll cup the right lower back to help clear out the metabolic waste and improve circulation.

It's all about tone! I have a regular #massage client (who's now training 1x week) that kept coming up with the same issues! Working the typical #deskjob I could see the weakness in his #posture/frame and the lack of overall #muscle development. When this happens the smaller and deeper muscles become overactive so in #massagetherapy I have to relax those over working. Then it's usually the other way around for ppl that are too muscular. Meaning I'll have to strengthen the deeper ones and relax the larger superficial ones. 💥 Knee pain with step ups💥 - One thing that I feel is important to emphasize with step ups, is that the way down is just as important as the way up. - When we focus all of our attention pertaining to our mechanics solely on the way up, that is when we tend to come crashing down to the ground, and start to feel pain in our knees. - Remember, no matter how good the ascent portion is, if we injure ourselves on the way down, then we have just taken away that sense of mindful movement. - Let’s call to account for a moment certain bones that make up part of our bodies. We’ve got the femur, tibia, fibula, and a ridge that separates the femur from the north and tibia & fibula from the south, to name a few important ones for this example. - Often times knee injuries occur when the femur from the north rides too far over this ridge, therefore too far over the tibia and fibula. A common example is when the knees jet out very far over the toes when we squat, we may feel a sudden pinch in the knee, that sometimes can be immediately taken away by keeping the knees over the feet and toes tracking the knees. A common cue given is “shins vertical.“ - The reason I share that here is so we can get a good look at what may be causing pain and injury on the way down from step ups. If we come crashing down on the way down, it’s quite easy for the femur to travel quite far over the bones of the lower leg, increasing injury risk. - Let’s be just as focused on the way down as we are on the way up, being conscious to control all aspects of the movement so that we can minimize risk of any injury. - 💥 Tag a friend that may benefit from seeing this!💥 - Any questions? Stop scaring your patients! ___ Here’s a story of one of my recent patients who came in with the MRI report of her neck and almost started crying...again. ___ This patient had chronic neck pain with occasional headaches. She showed me the MRI report with markings all over it. ___ The neurologist circled and underlined every age-related change in the neck- “uncovertebral hypertrophy” “mild to moderate foramina stenosis”- and sent her for a surgical consult! ___ The patient started crying in her doctors office over typical, age-related findings. ___ Now I’m not a neurologist, so I read this thing 3x to make sure I didn’t miss anything. ___ No cord compression. Mild nerve root compression and no neuro findings in the physical exam. Luckily the surgeon she followed up with did not recommend surgery. ___ ***PTs are not innocent here!
