Thelonious Monk; brilliant corners. Little intro needed here. Pure brilliance. Originally released in 1957, this copy was pressed in the mid1960s. Interestingly, side B is deep grooved.

Transcription Tuesday!
This is probably one of the harder solos that I've attempted to transcribe. The original recording is actually much faster than this but I slowed it down to work my way up in tempo and lock in the riffs.
Still got a ways to go obviously in trying to get this up to speed.
Sonny Stitt smashed this solo to pieces!!! His phrasing and placement was perfect. I think I cried when I heard him solo over this the first time 😂. I definitely cried trying to learn it. 🙄

60 years ago "a great day in Harlem" #Repost @sonnyrollinsbridgeproject • • • Sixty years ago today, 57 jazz musicians were photographed in front of a brownstone at 17 E. 126th Street in Harlem for what would become the most famous photo in jazz history. ‘A Great Day in Harlem’ was shot at around 10a.m. by freelance photographer Art Kane. It was published in the January 1959 issue of Esquire magazine, roughly seven months before Sonny Rollins went to The Bridge. The photo brought together different generations of jazz musicians. For example, pianist Luckey Roberts (b. 1887) was 43 years older than Sonny Rollins at the time of the photo. Rollins also stood near Rudy Powell (b. 1907), whose son he’d gone to school with. A number of Rollins’ heroes took part in the photo shoot including Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, & Count Basie. Rollins had (or would) perform with at least a dozen of the musicians there, including Hawkins, Young, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Oscar Pettiford, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Ernie Wilkins, & Wilbur Ware. Up-and-coming musicians such as Benny Golson, Marion MacPartland, & Mary Lou Williams were also in the photo. A 58th musician not in the photo, Willie “The Lion” Smith (b. 1897), got tired of standing and left the group to sit on the stoop next door. Three more - Ronny Free, Mose Allison, and Charlie Rouse - arrived too late to get in the photo; Dizzy Gillespie later took a photo of the latecomers with Lester Young, Mary Lou Williams, and Oscar Pettiford. Only two living legends remain from this photo: Benny Golson (b. 1929) and Sonny Rollins (b. 1930). There have been numerous homages to this photo, including A Great Day in Hip Hop (1998), A Great Day in London (2004), & A Great Day in Hollywood (2018). #SonnyRollinsBridge #sonnyrollins #sonnyrollinsbridgeproject

60 years ago today Art Kane took the legendary jazz photograph, “Harlem – 1958,” commonly known as “A Great Day in Harlem.” The photo session took place at 17 East 126th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues. 57 musicians showed up for the shoot, including such greats as Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Count Basie, Sonny Rollins, Lester Young, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins and Pee Wee Russell.

If you haven't listened to artists like Thelonious Monk cause you're not into jazz...or you only listen to metal, rock or whatever....grab the Monk album by Thelonious Monk and enjoy...it changed my life years and years ago.

You may not know this, but Ellis is an avid Jazz Cat. He is particularly fond of saxophonists. This morning he’s been gently roused from a sound sleep by the musical stylings of Sonny Rollins. Poll: should we take Ellis to a Sonny Rollins concert in a baby carrier? Yes: put some ear protection on that refined, leonine feline and get thee to a show. No: you know he’s a Coltrane Cat and he accepts no substitutes. #ellis #jazzcat #catsofinstagram #catstagram #jazz #sonnyrollins #johncoltrane

#SonnyRollinsBridge #sonnyrollins #musicmakeseverythingbetter #jazzjunkie

Sixty years ago today, 57 jazz musicians were photographed in front of a brownstone at 17 E.
1887) was 43 years older than Sonny Rollins (b. 1930) at the time of the photo.
Three more - Ronnie Free, Mose Allison, and Charlie Rouse - arrived too late to get in the photo; Dizzy Gillespie later took a photo of the latecomers with Lester Young, Mary Lou Williams, and Oscar Pettiford.
