An astronaut aboard the International Space Station shot this springtime photograph of the snow-covered regions of British Columbia (Canada) and the U.S. state of Washington. Both cities of Vancouver, as well as the island, were named for Captain George Vancouver, a British Royal Navy officer best known for his exploration of the northwestern Pacific Coast in the late 1700s. (Note: Vancouver, Washington, is just beyond the top edge of the image.)
After the expeditions by Vancouver and later by Lewis and Clark in the early 1800s, American and European pioneers flocked to the region. This area of the Pacific Northwest, specifically near the Salish Sea and the Columbia River, became popular for fur trading between Native people and European and American explorers in the early 1800s.
By the late 1800s, newcomers quickly realized the potential of another natural resource, which led to a flourishing commercial salmon industry in the 1890s. The region is still a major exporter of wild salmon and now farmed salmon, too; British Columbia’s largest agrifood export is actually Atlantic salmon. The area is also popular with tourists who visit the region’s lakes and rivers to fish for trout, sturgeon, and salmon.
Prominent in this photo is the snow-capped Cascade Volcanic Arc, a range of thirteen major volcanic centers that runs from northern California to coastal British Columbia. The volcanoes are fueled by subduction along the edges of two tectonic plates. Many of them became active about 36 million years ago, with the most recent activity being ash and steam eruptions and summit dome growth at Mount St. Helens that ended in 2008.

@firstmanmovie review:
This story is about Neil Armstrong's life on his way to his first moonlanding. What sounds nice, I find a little disappointing.
I very much missed everything that happened behind the scenes before the moon landing could be possible. Unfortunately, this was very minimized.
For the rest I have been very happy with #ryangosling as #neilarmstrong . He set a good character and absorbed me in the life of Neil.
Using little CGI at the beginning of the film, made the CGI at the end of the film kind of horrible...
The film ticked everything about the moon landing, but felt a bit empty and did not really have any satisfaction unfortunately.

Can we take a minute just to appreciate this ... woah 😮 there’s a whole lot of world out there 🤘🏼 #Repost @nasa ・・・ A "window to the world!" 🌎 Viewed from a window inside the International Space Station's (@ISS) cupola, we see the Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle-7 cargo craft at the orbital complex on Oct. 11, with a view of Earth from 257 miles above providing the dramatic backdrop. The cupola is a panoramic control tower for the station with a dome-shaped module containing windows through which operations on the outside of the orbiting outpost can be observed and guided. From here, astronauts control the station’s robotic arm, which helps with the attachment and assembly of station elements much like the operator of a building crane perched in a control cabin. Just WOW! I could imagine being one of the eight people sealed inside this Biosphere experiment for two years. Skedaddling from the rain forest, over to the 27-foot deep ocean, then tending to the animals, and desert plants under these massive domes. 😯Fun facts: The entire Biosphere would explode in heat or implode in cold without the massive rubber and aluminum “lung” that allowed air pressure to adjust within the sealed environment. 2. The electric bill is $500,000 annually because a solar-power system would have cost $3 billion and was not advanced enough when it was built in the 80’s. 3. Biospherians tended coffee plants that grew enough beans for them to enjoy ONE cup of coffee every two weeks! 😳☕️🍃 And I learned about forty other amazing things (if not more😂). I highly recommend touring the @biosphere2 when you’re in the Tucson, AZ area. (Great for kids as well/Not handicap accessible-Lots of stairs.) ❤️🌎🍃 #biosphere #bio #landscapescience sciencerocks #goscience #plants #geoscience #biology #arizona #aztravel arizonahiking #hikingarizona #gardentour #wondersoftheworld #spacestation #wondersofourplanet #spaceage #dome #garden #gardening #aquaponics #science #rainforest #amazingvacation #travel #desert #travelguide #biosphere2 #az #shoplocalaz #tucson #tucsonaz

Take a deep look. 🌀 This breathtaking image shows a dark cloud where new stars are forming along with a cluster of brilliant stars that have already emerged from their dusty stellar nursery. This incredibly dense, 80-trillion-km tall cloud known as Lupus 3 lies about 600 light-years away from your problems. Latest research suggests, It is likely that the Sun formed in a similar star formation region more than 5 billion years ago.

"One of the best things I can really tip my hat to my parents on, is they never told me that girls didn’t do this." - Astronaut Shannon Walker with Senator Dianne Feinstein. Selected by @NASA as an astronaut in May 2004, Walker completed Astronaut Candidate Training in February 2006. Her training included scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction in Shuttle and International Space Station systems, physiological training, T-38 flight training, and water and wilderness survival training. She has also completed qualifications in the spacewalk skills program and the Canadian Space Agency Mobile Servicing System (MSS) Robotics Operator (MRO) course. She is a remarkable testament to doing all the work necessary to achieve a huge wild idea of doing what it takes to go to space and explore our universe.

All of them, account for only 5% of the gravity in the Universe. The other 95%? We really don’t know, we just call it Dark Matter (25%) and Dark Energy (70%)

The excitement level was 💯 today as we announced the nine astronauts that will fly on some of the first Commercial Crew flights to the International Space Station (@ISS). American companies Boeing (@Boeing) and SpaceX (@SpaceX) have been building brand new, high-tech spaceships to transport astronauts from American soil into space for the first time since the space shuttle retirement in 2011.
This new spaceflight capability will allow us to maintain a crew of seven astronauts on the space station. That means more science! This scientific research leads to breakthroughs and also aids in understanding and mitigating the challenges of long-duration spaceflight, which is important in our journey to send humans to the Moon and Mars.

Remember the Constellation Program? It was the old way NASA was going to go to Mars - it was cancelled under the Obama administration but never really had much potential.
=
Test launches were completed, however: the most notable being the Ares 1-X launch, a crazy unmanned launch that used a solid rocket booster with a huge second stage! Today, that program has evolved into the SLS rocket (which will hopefully launch sometime in the next two years!!)

The inner core of the Earth is solid, and softer than previously thought, according to a study which could improve our understanding of how the planet was formed. Researchers at The Australian National University (ANU) came up with a way to detect shear waves, or "J waves" in the inner core -- a type of wave which can only travel through solid objects. "We found the inner core is indeed solid, but we also found that it's softer than previously thought," said Hrvoje Tkalcic, an associate professor at ANU. . . . . #earth #planet #spacestation #spacemission #spacex #bfr #elonmusk #chrishadfield #neildegrassetyson #nasa #natgio #discovery #animalplanet #ocean #sciencefiction #scientificillustration #scientificstudy #sciencefacts #nightsky #city #research #mars #exoplanets #sciencenews #sciencenerd #news #scientificvideo #flatearth #flatearthtruth
