Bulgarian split squats. 😱. Haven’t done one in over a year and now I remember why... When I try and hit proper depth, I just fall right over.  My ankles just don’t bend the way the way they used to and my hip flexors are jacked up from sitting too much.  So for me, that means two key things - 1. Mobilize what I need to and 2. Do more split squat!  Depth here I come! .

Yesterday, we had an exclusive tasting of some hard to find bourbons 🥃, so I was expecting to feel horrible today and have a not so good run, maybe even no run at all!  I hopped on the treadmill for 9.3 miles, then headed out in the rain for the rest, so my husband could get some miles in too while the kiddos slept.  It was an unexpected, amazing run! I think I need to drink bourbon more often 😂

Our postpartum conditioning focuses on building functional core strength. .

Our core is our powerhouse, and where all movement is initiated!  It’s important that our core is strong in a few functional components: anti or stabilization, rotation, and extension are our focuses. .

Here our mamas are working on rotation with lateral sandbag throws and anti lateral flexion with sled drags. .

As always, we have our little coach cheering our mamas on!  His mama honors yo mama.

I had a million reasons why I could have not done this race today (a week from hell, a tornado, no power, kids with fevers to name a few), but I had an even better reason why that trumped all those other reasons - ME! 
I know the expected mom answer maybe would be to say for them, but honestly I got back into running, trained and did this half marathon (first one post babies) today so I would be forced to selfishly focus on myself for a little bit. 
Setting any self goal is hard, but as a parent i promise you it is doubly hard because it means someone else has to hold down the fort while you are away taking time for yourself (this is the part where i have to give a shout out to @mgrouhy for making my long run Sundays happen - TY ❤️). So I think right now I’m going to rest a little bit longer while I feel strong, happy and proud before I have to get back to reality - which is emptying the entire contents of my fridge/freezer and taking a cold shower.

Sunday motivation. Fact: there was a time when I refused to wear sleeveless shirts. I was so self conscious about my arms. I wish I could go back in time and give myself a hug and tell myself to just wear the shirt. The past few months have been such a great journey of learning how to love myself. I’ve learned to love my body no matter what the scale says or what others say. I’m now focusing on how I feel. And today I’m feeling strong. I’m enjoying this fitness journey. To me, being healthy is more than just physical. I want to make sure I’m healthy spiritually and mentally as well so that I can be the best mom and person that I can be. #selflove #strongasamother

Put me on a mountain and I’ll always feel home.  Some people like the view from the top, but running down has always been my favorite. You’re weightless, it’s exhilarating, and the most free I’ve ever felt.  This was exactly what I needed to calm the nerves of race week.  I feel like I never train enough anymore and that feeling of inadequacy is something I hate.  I have to believe that the work I’ve put in is enough and to trust that my body is capable of doing hard things. Ready or not, marathon 2 of 3 for 2018 here I come.

How do you spend your Sundays??! I used to plop myself on the couch and binge watch tv til it was bed time.  While that sounds pretty awesome and will probably never happen again until my kids go to college. But, that didn’t set the right tone for my week. .
Now, I spend a few hours in the coffee shop #mombossing it up, meal prepping, laundry, some cleaning, and most importantly family time. While it certainly does t sound glamour is its super important to set your tone for the week on Sundays!!! 😍

Last move of the 45 minute long workout. I was gassed, tired, beaten... ready to quit. But when it HURTS, that’s when the work REALLY begins. So I push harder HERE than on any other part of the workout. And I fuggin’ CRUSHED IT. .
Don’t wish for it, if you’re not willing to WORK for it. Never easy, but always worth it. :

Truly resting doesn’t always mean sleeping or taking naps— lets be honest, we don’t ever get to sleep in or take naps with this crazy crew. Rest means giving your body a break, going for a walk, putting down the phone and enjoying quality time, going to church, enjoying nature, etc. On rest days we like to enjoy some kind of family outing and enjoy each other’s company. All summer it was the water park, but now that fall is heading our way, we will going for hikes and walks more often!

I love this picture because when I took it, I thought, “Holy crap, my baby isn’t a baby anymore, he’s a grown child and he is totally owning this athlete thing right now.”

I was so nervous about putting him in sports. Mostly because I just didn’t want to force him into anything and I was worried he might feel pressure or not like it. You see, I LOVE sports. It’s who I am. Athletics have played a huge role in shaping me into the person I am. And I’ve always wanted my kids to share that love with me, but I never wanted to force anything, and I have to be honest there is a part of me that was scared I’d be disappointed if he decided it wasn’t for him and selfishly I was not ready to deal with that. But alas, we went for it.

The thing is, kids are who they are. There is nothing you can do to force them to be someone they are not. It’s a part of being a parent that surprised me the most. You can do everything “right” and still end up with a complete different result than expected. It’s actually pretty cool once you get over yourself a little bit lol and “let go” of the control and just freaking LOVE your kid (that’s the usual pep talk I have to give myself -the recovering control freak 😭).

So here’s what I know about my Elijah. He’s passionate, smart, empathetic, stubborn, determined and independent. AND, after this first week of sports, I’ve also learned my boy is an ATHLETE. There is no denying the joy he gets from being out there. He’s a competitor just like his mama (okay, like his dad too 🤪😘 @mikeewald ).

I guess I should have known sooner, this kid has been killing it at our Crossfit gym. How many 4 year olds beg to go lift weights and workout?!? I was still holding my breath though because I felt like the Crossfit thing was more for me than for him. But, maybe it’s really an “us” thing now.
.
Parenting is hard. You don’t realize how many selfish tendencies you really do have until you have children 😬. But man, when the good stuff hits you, it hits you. There is no greater love. And watching your kids light up with confidence and pure joy when they are doing something they love is the best feeling in the world.

These two pictures are 10 years apart, almost to the day. When I started working out again 5 months ago, my #fitspo wasn’t of any model or fitness guru, it was this picture of myself ten years ago on my honeymoon☀️. I know I’ll never be that same person or live in the same body that’s on the left. My body went through the hormone meds, injections and procedures of in vitro five times 💉🔬. I’ve been blessed enough to carry two babies, had two c-sections to safely deliver them, dealt with diastasis recti and breastfeed both girls for nearly two years👶🏻👶🏻. Now I’m living this crazy busy working mom life😜fueled by a constant cycle of coffee ☕️, pre-workout 🥤, Tito’s 🍸and repeat🔃. But putting in the effort consistently and feeding ourselves *mostly* healthy foods proves that our bodies are resilient despite the passing of time and challenges we’ve faced💪🏼

Your mind is a powerful tool, and most of us don’t utilize it to its full potential. Your mind does not want you to fail, so it will do it’s hardest to keep you from taking risks that could potentially let you down. When you figure out how to push past those what ifs, and go after that thing you’ve constantly been thinking about doing, or that goal that kind of scares you a little bit but would go ecstatic if you actually reached it, you will start accomplishing great things. Double tap if you are ready to push past your excuses and go for happy. ❤️

I know for myself fitness was the piece of the puzzle that I was missing, when it was not in my life I felt incomplete, and didn’t really know who I was any more. What is a Diastasis Recti?

A Diastasis Recti is the technical term for abdominal separation. The word 'diastasis' means separation and the 'recti' muscles are the outermost abdominal muscles. So, it is a separation of the outermost abdominal muscles.

When the muscles separate the connective tissue (linea alba) joining these muscles stretches sideways.

The job of these muscles (called rectus abdominis), is to support your back and organs. The sideways stretching of the connective tissue causes it to become thinner and weaker meaning it cannot effectively support your belly button, back and organs. To have a strong core, your muscles must be close together. .

First day of real, true fall running weather was here today! A beautifully crisp morning with little humidity was perfect for my long run. About 50 of my first 60 minutes were on single track dirt trails, so my pace was slower but the effort felt towards the moderate range. Had to jump a few big logs, duck under others, and dodge some mud but the trails were sooo nice to be on. Hit the pavement with about 40 minutes left in my run. Coach called for the last 30 to be at a hard effort. Once the last 30 started I switched my watch mode to just tell me the time of day. I really, truly wanted to only go on the effort I was feeling, not a specific pace. I did this a few weeks ago and it seemed to work for me so I gave it another shot. I shocked myself by negative splitting my last 4 miles and having them be some of the faster ones I’ve ran recently! 7:24, 7:20, 7:09, 6:59.

Building fitness isn’t always fun, but the ride is enjoyable! There’s something to learn from every single run... and today I learned to just trust myself and go on feel. I took a little time for some self care 💅🏼 yesterday before I have to take Alexa to New York in a few days. Next week is going to be rough and I’ve been trying to mentally prepare myself for weeks. But there’s really no preparing yourself- you just do what you have to do and try to make it through the best that you can, until you get to come home. Lex will be having her 5th injection, two sets of scans and a bone marrow biopsy to check on the status of her disease. If you wouldn’t mind sending all of your good thoughts and prayers our way, it would mean the world to me. She’s at a high risk for relapse so I’m praying hard that her scans show the disease remains stable. 💗 #cancermom #neuroblastoma #survivor #momofawarrior #wearesurvivors #choosehope #momofone #girlmoms #nevergiveup #strongasamother #selfcare #manionpoint💅🏼

I’m slowly making my way back into a workout regimen. Very. Slowly. I haven’t done any squats with barbells and no deadlifts. I don’t know when I will attempt any of that. But my arms aren’t injured so bis and tris for the win! I felt like a had the biggest pump and could see ALL the veins! And then there was the 25 godforsaken minutes of trying to string together DUs. I hate hate hate and loathe double unders.😒💪🏼👊🏼
