9.5/10
Offred narrates to us the life of the Handmaid in the Gilead regime, harkening to the process of the regime taking over and her becoming a Handmaid.
This book is, to make an understatement, fantastic. The existentialism of modern life and our current fragment society are just some of the socio-political commentaries which can be drawn from this incredible book. The fragility of the woman’s place in society and precarious nature of democracy is certainly enlightening in the context of both modern society and that of the period when Atwood was writing. What is perhaps the most remarkably haunting regarding the narrative ingeniously woven by Atwood, is that the experiences of Offred are a plethora of acts taken against women throughout human history. I might note that the reverence of this fact is reinforced within the historical notes section of the book.

Happy weekend everyone! Sharing a closeup of these #vintage lovelies today! .
💙❤️💙
.

I wasn’t planning on starting another collection until @vintagebooks kindly #gifted me these two books from their Vintage Classics European series. I believe there are 5 titles in total (Don Quixote, Death in Venice and other stories, Madame Bovary, The Leopard and In Europe) and all have stunning covers using fabrics from @wallacesewell .
💙❤️💙
.
I’ve always wanted to read #donquixote So I think I’ll be adding this one to collection soon......are any of these on your radar? .

"Why is it that a woman can see from a distance what a man cannot see close?" -Thomas Hardy, The Return of the Native. . . The Return of the Native is widely recognised to be one of Thomas Hardy's most representative works. In this tale of doomed love, passion, estrangement and melancholy, Hardy brilliantly explores the theme that is familiar throughout his fiction: the diabolical role of chance in determining the course of action. #thomashardy #bookstagram #bookobsessed #booksofinstagram #vintageclassics #love #bookobsessed #bookquotes #bookshelf #bookaholic

Vintage classics! Mina favorit editions! Saknar några i min ryska samling där War and peace nog är min nästa önskan. Jag har även några engelska klassiker och funderar på att utöka med några Virginia Woolfs. .

I’m a couple days behind on the October rendition of #12daysofannestagram hosted by @carrottoppapershop and @thebooksellersdaughter but I’ll get there eventually! The second prompt was ‘Cozy with Anne’. I don’t think that would be hard to do at all with any one of the gorgeous @viragopress covers of the Anne series, especially this one. Is this quintessential falltimey or what?! Add a scarf and a beverage and you’ve got yourself a good time. 👍🍂🧣🍁

“So one of my responsibilities, as a white, cis-gendered woman, is to learn how to be a traitor to the 'joys' of patriarchal culture that I experience, however unconsciously.” ― Erin Wunker, Notes from a Feminist Killjoy: Essays on Everyday Life
.
Today for #feministfriday I’m talking about how throughout history, women have had their voices silenced. Authors such as Jane Austen and the Bronte’s, who we now revere as part of the ‘literary canon’, were not originally published under their own names; Austen published anonymously as ‘A Lady’, whilst the Bronte’s used male pseudonyms. I probably don’t have to point out that almost invariably, their male counterparts published under their own names.
Essentially, to break it down, what we’re seeing here is a policing of who can ‘respectably’ write, and more generally, of what women should and should not do.
It SHOULD be the case in 2018 that no woman’s voice goes ignored, or drowned out, or censored. Yet, as the recent editing of Jasmin Kaur’s @jusmun poem shows, this still occurs, especially- and this is important- the voices of women of colour, lgbtq, disabled. It’s not simply enough to stand up for women’s rights, we have to stand up against racism, homophobia, poverty, ableism. If we don’t, what we aim for isn’t truly feminism.
And we never, never, take someone’s voice; we have our own voices, our own experiences, and THAT is what we have to use. .

'The most perceptive character in a play is the fool, because the man who wishes to seem simple cannot possibly be a simpleton.' Don Quixote.
I love my new copies of Thomas Mann stories and Don Quixote. They are 2 of 5 editions which form part of the new @Vintagebooks European classics series. The covers are the work of textile design firm Wallace Sewell who are best known for designing the seat covers on the London Underground. I do not usually buy every book in a series but this time I am planning to buy the full series. Have you read Death in Venice or Don Quixote? What did you think?

#FrankensteinReview -
Book misconceptions. If you asked me a few months ago whether I would consider reading Frankenstein, I would probably have replied in the negative. I mean, who wants to read a book about a monster who is big, ugly and scary? Right? No actually. Wrong. Frankenstein has many of the required ingredients associated with gothic fiction: maddened ambition, gruesome death, a monster. I think this is why I had been put off in reading it. Then @inbookishfashion organised a readalong for it and I thought why not? So here we are. *

The book is about SO much more than just horror. I was amazed at the humanity of the monster, how real he was, how utterly relatable. I mean, why should he have compassion for us mere humans if we judge him on his appearance and have NO regard for him? Selfish? Maybe, but it still struck a chord with me. His humanity is not only witnessed in his physical being, but also in his intellectual and emotional thoughts as well. He was created and not nurtured. He was accepted as a monster and not cared for. Yet we expect him to be grounded and stable. Think of us humans and ask yourself how can that be? The ending of this book left me reeling and, honestly, I cannot get this monster out of my head. *

I have also been left with high regard for Mary Shelley. She was just 18 when she had the idea for Frankenstein; 19 when she finished writing the book. How a teenager could come up with such an achievement of a novel is astonishing.
Rating: 4.5🌟

Peeeeeeeeeeeeeps. How be?

I’m so exited that the inimitable @whatsallyreadnext has started up a new Jane Austen Book Club here on insta. The first book we read will be Persuasion (my favourite) in November. If you’d like to join, please send Sally a message and she’ll add you to the group chat.
.
In other news, I’ve created a Twitter account (my twitter handle is the same as this one), where I’ll share bookish stuff, articles, comments, probably the odd cat gif because who doesn’t love those. We’ll see where it goes. Anyhow if you’re on Twitter, either bookish or otherwise, please add me and help me learn the ropes! Any favourite twitter accounts please give them a shoutout too.
.
Fact Of The Day: did you know that during her lifetime, Jane Austen published anonymously as ‘A Lady’?

I watched “The Phantom of The Opera” with Gerard Butler on Netflix quite recently and it has definitely become one of my favourite movies. I fell in love with the story, the characters, the music and the way it was filmed. Since then I went out and bought a beautiful copy of the book. I think it would make a perfect Halloween book and so I’m dying to read it. #bookstagram #bookworm #booklover #bibliophile #cozyvibes #ocartepentrutine #cititoridinromania #thephantomoftheopera #gerardbutler #autumn #aesthetic #bookish #bookaholic #specialedition #vintageclassics

Guys! I'm literally becoming a classics person. Although I get very little time to read these days, whatever I look for are Classics. Aren't these covers super adorable? Especially the Little Women one, I've seen it very rarely on Bookstagram. I love how the pastel colours mingle and give this vintage vibe to the whole design! 🌿

What Classics do you think are evergreen and can be enjoyed by all age groups?

If I were of a background that claimed patron saints, I think I’d choose St. Virginia as my own. How her 100 year old writing can feel fresh and pertinent and innovative today often leaves me in awe. I am slowly, slowly reading/re-reading everything of hers I can get my hands on in no particular order. Here’s what I’m learning. I can’t force her - her writing is like water. If I am struggling against it, I must put her aside for a time when I am prepared to let her words take me like a wave. I fought with Mrs. Dalloway a bit in the summer, and when I came back to her in the fall, she read like a dream.
I don’t read introductions when I come to a book for the first time, do you? I want to experience them as the author intended a reader to experience them - relatively fresh. So I didn’t know that #MrsDalloway was almost a companion piece to The Waves. Slipping in and out of the consciousness of linked characters over the course of one day vs over the course of lifetimes in The Waves.
After I finish a book, especially one that challenges me, though, it’s a different thing entirely. I’m all in for the literary criticism, and so I followed the novel with #TheMrsDallowayReader which enhanced my experience of the novel considerably. It contains stories that provided the blueprints for the eventual book, Woolf’s diary entries around the time of writing Mrs Dalloway outlining the trouble it gave her in its making, a handful of essays about the book’s significance and even a famous story from the woman she felt was her truest rival, Katherine Mansfield, all of which left me with even more to contemplate.
p.s. the amazing envelope was drawn by my friend @tracie_west who didn’t even know about my #woolfproject at the time!
