So despite what I said in a previous post about mainly doing yin going forward, earlier this week I went to a hot power yoga class in Cape Town for the first time. Never again! The teacher and the class were great, they weren't the problem. I was the problem. With the heat and strong movements, adrenaline kicked in pretty quickly, I was driven more by the rush than I was by the subtle sensations. My ego came out massively, always opting for the most advanced version of the poses, it was self-will rather than willingness. Guided savasanas aren't a thing here, the teacher left straight after the class, leaving it up to the students how long they stayed in savasana. Inevitably 99% of the class had left within the minute. As I lay there, all these criticisms popped up in my head. A hot power yoga class and no savasana! Surely you need at least 10 mins to reset after that kind of class! If I worked at this studio, I wouldn't allow it! Students need to be kept in savasana! Etc etc. Again, more ego. I know best. They have done it wrong. I have the authority to judge what is and is not a 'proper savasana. Gah. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I really don't think one type of yoga is better or worse than another - but in my eyes it comes down to your temperament as an individual. Are you hot headed 🙋🏼‍♀️ and fast moving 🙋🏼‍♀️? A hot power yoga class might not be the one for you 🙄. Are you quite rigid in your ways? Maybe go to yin. Are you feeling slow, lethargic, unmotivated? Try a more dynamic class. Yoga is a tool to help you rebalance, don't use it to reinforce your tendencies (or your ego 🙄). Challenge them. Give yourself the opportunity to change.

Can’t wait the weekend to begin!!! I definitely need a little rest. But in order to remind how grateful I am to my strong body today I went for #armbalances.

Changing habits is hard, but making better choices is rewarding. Enjoying it is important to stay on track, whether it’s food or exercise ✨ Just  a rational decision that it’s good for you won’t do the trick!
Yoga can be intimidating - if you look at pictures, it either looks like you need to be flexible and/or strong or like someone looking serene and sitting still. Yet there is everything in between and those funky poses take time and persistence. However, it’s not the pose that matters - it’s the breath and the focus💫

It is important that we look after our physical and mental health so we can keep on top of things during stressful times. Here are some self-care tips which can help boost your wellbeing:
🙏Regularly engage in an activity that you find relaxing. Put aside a little time every day to do something that you really enjoy, such as going for a walk, gardening, listening to music or reading. Schedule it into your daily routine so that it becomes a natural part of your life.
🙏Practice regular relaxation. Try to squeeze in some yoga or meditation before starting your day. It can be helpful to visualise a safe, peaceful space e.g. a comforting room, a beautiful beach or lovely bush setting, and spend 5-10 minutes imagining this in your mind.
🙏Maintain your friendships. Connect regularly with friends and family and undertake activities you enjoy together.

I think we did a fair few warrior 3’s last night - I did turn up the volume a tad in last nights class -  it was busy class and the energy was good so I thought -why not! I am always amazed at how far some of my Yogis have come - I remember starting that Wednesday evening class .... sometimes I would just have 2 attend class and week on week I would just make sure I would get there and teach with an open heart and mind - the class is now busy and some of my Yogis have been coming for 2 years . So to all my Wednesday evening Yogis old and new - Thank you - My inner warrior sees your inner warrior #namaste .

I was lucky to be taught by Elizabeth at @iyengarlondon on a spontaneous class which was covered by her, and was left marvelled at her health, insight, and knowledge in what she taught.

It's a year to the day that I started my yoga teacher training & I don't think I've ever packed so much into a year than what has followed that training. I've been so lucky to spend the past year in so many beautiful, challenging & mostly unknown places to me with time to dedicate to a practice and learning. Continuing with my practice both in yoga & meditation on a daily basis is far more difficult now I'm back home. There's a space issue, a time issue, a noise issue, a launching a new business issue....i could go on BUT most importantly is that I make it a priority to make it work in my current circumstances. Letting the practices and little rituals that fulfil and nurture you the most slip away because other things seem to matter more benefits no one. Even if it's only for 5 minutes today, I encourage you to take a moment to do something that makes you feel wonderful. I've had a coffee in bed whilst visualising my dream yoga & meditation studio business. Perhaps it's the caffeine....because it was a strong coffee...but I feel excited and ready to sit down at a laptop ALL day now working on the website and admin bits. Let me know what 5 minutes you take for you today too 👇.

1) Begin in Mountain pose. Inhale and extend arms over head. Elongate spine and extend through the crown of the head.

2) Exhale and bend the knees keeping the thigh bones pressing back and knees against each other. Draw the shoulder blades onto upper back ribcage

Not sure if you guys know but you are so appreciated! I’ve had times when no1s turned up to my classes & many cancellations. Yeah it’s annoying when classes are empty as being a yoga teacher I know how helpful yoga has been to me & I see what impact it has on peoples lives. They sleep with ease, their brain function improves, their digestion flows & they breathe a whole lot better. Guess what? I’m not stopping when classes aren’t busy, I teach in half terms because it’s important to maintain a regular practice. Especially when you find something that work for you! 
Hot yoga, beginners or dynamic I got you covered. I’m here for you & I appreciate your commitment to just turning up, even if it was just once & you hated it. At least you found out you hated it. Don’t think what if 💭 just do. Get your ass to class 🍑

I always chase the sunsets 
I've always been a sucker for the sky, especially when the sun dips behinds the clouds and magnifies its beauty out into the world 
I've reached a lot of goals this year, and I have some exciting projects coming up. One goal I've mentioned previously is that I want to watch the sunrise. I can see it begining to rest upon the mountains on my journey to work, but I want to get up in the dark. Drive to a beach with my favourite music playing (Enya.) I want to sit on the sea wall, the sea air in my lungs, the harsh wind of the night upon my face, my fingertips numb from the cold, blanket wrapped around me keeping my bones warm and watch the sun rise 🧡

How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success? 
I've noticed a pattern that I often mess up the first time I try something! I 'failed' my first interview for an Investment bank 10 years ago. Similarly, I messed up my first ever audition for a yoga studio. While seemingly failures, both were opportunities to learn and I’ve not failed an interview or an audition since!

Until we try something we simply don't know what we don't know. By trying, we understand what is needed and can focus our efforts in the most efficient way. I don't like the feeling of failure, and without a doubt, that is a driver for me.

Switch side. Do what’s not natural. Inspired by @tiffanyrlui to practice bow & arrow and stag legs on my non-natural side. I usually do left leg front & right leg back. This is my first time practicing the other way round. It feels unnatural but it will definitely help balancing out my body in the long run.
