My other passion apart front being a #historyteacher and #perthteachers is #art. It has taken me several years to really hit my stride in this kind of #zentangle #mandala #abstractart way of drawing.
Drawing and art help me relax after work. Those of you who are interested take a look at my other Instagram account #teacher_and_the_geek a joint account where I post photos of the art my husband and I collaborate on.

Morning view: reflecting on the industrial traces of the past. Montreal along the Lachine Canal.

I thought waking up at 5 am was the most difficult thing in the world. It turns out waking up at 4 am is much worse. Ok it was 3:45 but that didn't sound as lyrical in the last sentence. Oli enjoyed waking up early as he got more play time. The man knows what he wants.
It is a good day for many many coffees the first was at 5 am followed by a second at 5:30. Now, during my spare today, off to my new favourite cafe in Montreal. Yo et Co Espresso Bar

Hello world, Kaitlyn here. ⁣
⁣
If there are two things I love in this world, besides Jesus and my family of course, it’s history and lifting weights. So I decided to blend the two together and document my journey. ⁣
⁣
January 2 I start my Student Teaching semester. Holy cow that’s so crazy to say. I took my last final last night and although I won’t get that cap and gown till May, it sure feels like I’m done with school. ⁣
⁣
Anyways, I decided to start this account so that I can keep track of all the crazy that is teaching, but also hold myself accountable in the gym. ⁣
I took 3 months off from working out this semester, 3 MONTHS! And mentally, I needed it. But boy do I miss leg day. ⁣
⁣
So basically the purpose of this account is to function as my place for sharing my journey in the classroom and in the gym. Hope you’ll stick around!

Never let fear hold you back from taking the next step on your adventure. Georgia O'Keeffe never did and her career blossomed like the flowers she’s known for painting. Learn more about this incredible artist on the @historyheroblast website. ◾️

12/13/1774 — The Prequel 🐎
.
You’ve heard of Paul Revere’s famous ride. But did you know that 4️⃣ months prior, he had a dress rehearsal?
.
Today in Boston, 1774, our silversmith emissary mounted his horse and bolted north to Portsmouth, New Hampshire ⬆️. No, not for the craft beers and charming artisanal goods of today 🍺, but to warn Granite Staters that the British were coming ‼️
.
See, Samuel Adams and the Boston Committee of Correspondence had gotten word that Thomas Gage, the British commander-in-chief, was sending 2 regiments (anywhere between 80 and 140 men) to bone up the sparse 6-soldier defense the Brits had at Fort William and Mary on Portsmouth’s Great Island 🇬🇧⚔️
.
Why? The fort had a LOT of artillery, and the Redcoats were getting #anxious 🔫
.
This information ended up being entirely inaccurate, but far be it from Americans to miss out on setting ourselves up for an epic tale of glory based on faulty intelligence 🤔
.
So off rode Agent Revere, not exactly comforted by the December winds 🌬 and general lack of Route 95 🛣. 60 miles later, he arrived late afternoon and started an emergency meeting of Portsmouth’s own Committee of Correspondence to talk strategy.
.
NH royal governor and Dean Wormer ancestor (not really) John Wentworth learned of Revere’s arrival and had his chief justice tell the patriots to their faces that any assault on Fort William and Mary would be “the highest act of treason and rebellion they could possibly commit.” 😵
So, obviously, the patriots decided to take Fort William and Mary #gopats 🇺🇸
.
The next morning, 200 volunteers rendezvoused in the town center to row out to Great Island 🛶. People from surrounding towns brought their numbers to 400, which is awesome but also #alittle #excessive for a 6-man enemy force 🧨
.
By the time British reinforcements showed up ‪on 12/17‬, the patriots had already nabbed 60 muskets and 16 pieces of cannon that they would distribute throughout New Hampshire’s revolutionary network 🗽
.
Disgraced, Wentworth penned Gage to explain that this was all the fault of “Mr. Revere and the dispatch brought, before which all was perfectly quiet and peaceable here.” 😎

The Cathedral Church of Christ- Oldest Anglican Cathedral in the Church of Nigeria.

The Cathedral Church of Christ or Christ Church Cathedral, Marina is an Anglican Cathedral located in Lagos Nigeria. The CMS Cathedral (as it is popularly known) building construction started on 1st November 1924, and completed in 1946, however the first stone for the foundation was laid on March 29th 1867 before the Cathedral construction started in 1924. The Cathedral is patterned after the designs of architect Bagan Benjamin.
In 1976, the relics of Rev Dr Samuel Ajayi Crowther, a former Yoruba slave who became the first African bishop in the Anglican Church, were translated to the Cathedral. There is a cenotaph erected as a memorial of him. At various times in its history, the Cathedral was the seat of the archbishop of the province of West Africa, the seat of the archbishop and primate of all Nigeria and the seat of the archbishop of the Ecclesiastical province of Lagos. It is currently the seat of the Bishop of Lagos.

Today In History, 13 December 1973

Great Britain cut the work week from five to three days in an effort to reduce electricity consumption, and thus conserve coal stocks.

Prime Minister Edward Heath's objectives were business continuity and survival, and to avoid further inflation and a currency crisis. Television broadcasts were to shut-down at 10:30 p.m. each evening, and most pubs were even closed.

We started a blackout poetry project today using pages from All Quiet on The Western Front and I cannot wait to see what my students come up with. I have not used blackout poetry in my history classes before, but it just fit so perfectly with this topic. I talked all about how I planned this out in my stories & it is also in my “WWI” highlight. 😊
.

Teachers, we’re gonna make it! Yes, your students by now are probably bouncing off the walls or at the very least unable to stay in their seats. And yes, it probably is *actually* the 100th time you’ve answered the same exact question, but we’re almost there! And in the meantime, wear comfy clothes to school! .

Going back, revising and rethinking this exercise! Kids are getting better at spotting when a thesis isn’t arguable, specific enough or is unsupportable. Now, I’ve added a new layer! This time, I put a question before the sample thesis for editing. Now, when students go to fix the thesis, they have to make sure their revised thesis answers a question. Let’s see how this works! .

Bottle and can collection in my classroom going strong... one of my favorite finds though was the old 7-Up and RC Cola wood crates I found at a flea market in Central California. Those two drinks always remind me of my dad. Back when people had bars, he always had bottles of 7-Up and RC stocked in that dark brown padded vinyl monstrosity in the living room. I still love RC, but most of my students have never tried it- so I always buy it for them on our all day AP Review session. #7up #rccola #bottlecollection #cancollection #junkcollector #americana #1970s #classroomdecor #classroom #historyteacher #highschoolteacher #socialstudiesteacher #teachersofinstagram #teacher #vintage #californiateachers #civicsteacher #glassbottle #1960s

Savage killing of 60 tigers and rhinos in 10 DAYS: Shock pics of King George V on hunt

A SHOCKING set of photographs has emerged revealing King George V's hunting trip to Nepal where almost 60 tigers and rhinos were slaughtered - in just TEN DAYS

While Prince Harry has been praised for his work saving the black rhino in Africa, his great-great grandfather had a far different approach to conservation.

The monarch, who reigned from 1910-1936, went to Delhi in 1911 to be crowned Emperor of India.

After the ceremony he went on a hunting expedition in the Nepalese Terai - and this album of 179 photographs showing how devastatingly 'successful' his trip was.

Over the ten-day period around Christmas in 1911, his party killed a staggering 39 tigers, 18 rhinoceros, and four bears on the strip of land north of India.

In one image, the King poses over a giant Bengal tiger which he had shot. Another shows him standing with his perched on an enormous dead rhino.

There are numerous photographs showing members of the royal hunting party sat on elephants surrounded by dead tigers on the ground.

Another shocking photograph shows a servant standing beside a 'bag' of seven tigers, two rhino, and two bears.

The Maharaja spent months preparing for the King's visit, cutting roads for miles through the jungle.

He had 645 elephants ready for the hunting expedition and bullocks were tied at the edge of thick jungles to entice the tigers.

Records from the time tell how the King shot one tiger, wounding it badly, before a second tiger was killed by the King with a

Late Night Thoughts from a Wellness Lady: The Beautiful Chaos of ALL Christmases

Late Night Thoughts from a Wellness Lady: The Beautiful Chaos of ALL Christmases "Empty manger, perfect stranger, about to be born Into darkness, sadness, desperate madness, creation so torn We were so lost on earth, no peace, no worth, no way to escape In fear, no faith, no hope, no grace, and no light But that was the night before Christmas"- The Night Before Christmas by Brandon Heath The night before the first Christmas was probably as dark, chaotic, hopeless, sinful, and empty as this world can feel today; and yet, in an instant, in a moment, the pains of laboring gave birth to the unexpected and completely necessary Savior of the World. As a He inhaled the first time, the sweet hay and mustiness of a stone stable, His humble beginnings created a story from a wooden manager to a wooden cross to an empty tomb that was opened when the stone was rolled away. Isn't that just like God to bring everything about this story full circle? Isn't that like Jesus to be everything we need in the unexpected, humbled, perfect way? Isn't that like the Savior of the World to show up at just the right moment....when our last inch of strength is gone...when our last ounce of determination is waning....when at last we hit our knees in full surrender to the One who had it under control in the first place?! #WORDonWednesday #advent #gracefilledmomma #beachbodyperformance #shakeologyforthewin #fitfabulous #historyteacher #realmomwellness #productivityprincess #iamteambeachbody #teampursue #amwellnessclub #thejuggleisreal

Decided a few weeks ago to make use of part of my massive bulletin board and update it with the president’s cabinet members each time we talk about them. I’m loving how it’s turning out and each time I add to it I get to do one of my favorite things: laminate 😍 (ps in case you’re unaware fonts by @aperfectblendteaching are the BEST!)

I thought this exhibit at the @reaganlibrary40 was so creative! Each tree had pop culture items from each decade. This is the decade @readitwriteitlearnit and I are reading about in our classes right now so I had to get a picture. To see the rest of the exhibit and literally the coolest field trip ever, go watch my latest vlog! 🌲 #youtuber #teachertuber #iteachmiddleschool #iteachhistory #historyteacher #reaganlibrary #sitroomexp

Grading is only acceptable when paired with peppermint hot cocoa and christmas lights. Honestly, keeping up with grading has been one of my biggest struggles this year! If you have any grading tips, please share, because I feel like I'm constantly drowning in papers to grade!

I do an activity every so often that I call Silent Whiteboard Conversations. I use it to spike interest and make kids really think about how they feel about different topics. We started pyramids and mummification this week in our Egypt unit! I just love seeing how they think! (During a social emotional lesson, one of my kiddos looked at me crazy when I said we want kind and good friend. We decided she is the leader of a girl gang. You just have to be a girl to be in it. It’s the best joke of my teaching career #girlgang4LYFE) .

Today was an incredibly proud moment for my history class (from last year): having their documentary (“RECLAIMING: Lloyd Gaines”) be featured in an in-depth commemorative @npr story on the 80th anniversary (12/12/38) of Gaines winning the U.S. Supreme Court against the University of Missouri School of Law (court said the school violated the constitution when it rejected his application because he was black; 4 months later, he vanished, and remains missing). To have my students’ work highlighted as a recent surge push for an official investigation (via their film) for his legacy, showcases that Black history deserves its rightful focus in every classroom.

Another 3D print job by one of my students. He did this on his personal printer which is why it’s massive. But it’s meant to represent the Quebec referendum vote. When the group is able to open the escape box they win Quebec. #stem #history #historyteacher #canadianhistory

We are beginning our unit on economics and starting our classroom economy! 💵😁🙌 Students apply to buy items in the classroom and if approved, the item is now theirs. Once owned, these items can help generate passive income for students as they try to make money to help pay for their weekly desk rent or other classroom expenses. 🤑This student had a great idea to make money from the garbage can! 🙌#economics #classroomeconomy #classroomideas

#womancrushwednesday: What if a whole new world existed beyond the reality we see before us? That’s what Georgia O’Keeffe brought to life in her art, again and again. She carried on creating and expressing her point of view even beyond her ability to use her eyes due to macular degeneration. She influenced artists from Frida Kahlo to Emily Carr, who admired O'Keeffe for her revolutionary and empowering work.
Georgia is our nominee for #WCW. She is also the #historyhero nominee of Larkin Oates of Nashville, TN, USA.
Who will you nominate? Find out more on the @historyheroblast website. #linkinbio

300+ pages to kickoff today’s 4-week project in my history course: “RECLAIMING: N***ER & CRACKER: Defining Racial Context For Cambridge &. America.” What constitutes as “racist” language? How should they be handled in educational spaces? What efforts, if any—in a nation and high school—are/have been used to do the seemingly impossible: educate to dissipate evil roots? Because, when 2 words are “oddly” blocked from laptop computer access, it poses a deeper question that has been an underlying theme for my students all semester: how do “we” define/recognize “racist,” especially if we are all adhere to different context? Stay tuned.

This very famous picture shows Adolf Hitler and several high ranking Nazi officials as they survey and gaze upon what they believed to be one of their finest creations: the Schwerer Gustav.
This beast of an artillery gun was 155 feet long, 1,350 tonnes in weight, and fired 11 foot shells weighing 7 tonnes each. Just try to imagine a singular shell that weighs the same as an African Bush Elephant, the largest of its species.
The Gustav was a massive artillery cannon that moved around on a set railway track. Wherever it was determined to go, a track had to be created in order for it to get there. Luckily, the range on the Schwerer Gustav, about 39,000 meters (43,000 yards), allowed it to get into position a large distance away from the target, possibly shortening the travel time.
The Gustav Gun was originally meant to take part in the Invasion of France, specifically in the destruction of the Maginot Line Defenses along the Franco-German border, but due to the success of the German Blitzkrieg through Belgium and the Ardennes Forest, the gun was never needed as the Maginot Line was successfully outflanked and its troops forced to surrender.
The most famous use of the Gustav was during the Siege of Sevastopol in 1942, where it fired upon the city and even managed to destroy a Soviet munitions depot 30 meters under the ground.
The Gun was then moved north to participate in the Siege of Leningrad before moving westward with the Germans as they retreated in the face of a now victorious Red Army. It was meant to be used during the Warsaw Uprising, but the rebellion was put down before it could be fully repaired to fire.
In the end, the Germans would end up destroying the Gustav so that the Soviets could not use it against them in 1945, and so ended the story of the Schwerer Gustav.

EGYPTIAN GODS TRADING CARDS: these came out so GOOD. Students researched two Egyptians gods of their choice and created playing cards to demonstrate their learning. My favorite part is reading the “special move” each god had to have! Can’t wait to do this project again next year 😬
